How do

A friend and I are about to take up sprinting and hill climbing. We are currently looking for a suitable car and would consider one which has already been prepped. We'll be competing in standard production class so the car has to have glass and the interior still in it. We would also consider a mini that is just in good shape with a 1275cc engine or larger...

If anyone knows of any cars or could offer some guidance then give me a shout.

Go along to a few meetings and ask around as someone is bound to be selling their car. I was going to suggest contacting Steve Harris (BJ Autobits / Harris motorsport)but hes down in cranborne, Dorset. Steve is a pretty succesful hillclimber and usually knows of a few cars for sale or would certainly prep you one if funds allow.

I'd suggest either get a car thats been specifically prepared for the class your hoping to enter or keep it simple by getting a straight and tidy car, bung in a roll cage and add some yokos. But be aware that a boy'd up car isnt necessarilly any good for the track.

You'll never stop wanting to improve this or that. Upgrade to a fast road 1380, thats not enough so go to a budget race engine but then youre still down on power etc. The best thing is to change one thing at a time, starting with brakes and suspension.

Cheers. I actually have been to loads of events and use a 1380 motor on the road. We are looking at doing it on a budget as we want to prove that you dont have to be minted to compete.

What final Drive is the road car fitted with and what does the current road spec engine safely rev too?

Forget top speed. A 3.9 final drive and an engine that makes good power to 7K rpm will be a good start point. Top speed is pretty much immaterial on Hills/Sprints from what I've seen (Loton Park, Shelsey, Prescott, Curborough).

A torquey engine and a short-ish final drive should prove good fun. Just need earplugs if you intend to drive it to the hills/sprints eek

My car has just been on the rollers again. Its a pretty mild state of tune with a MED h/t cam (hi torque). Minisports rolling road says it has 90lbs/ft torque which is probably enough for a hill climb car, the final drive is a 3.9 I think. I couldnt take mine on the track though as it would mean me ruining it... I'd rather build one for the job than use one I will be worried about crashing

Sorry - I got the wrong end of the stick.. I thought it was adapting your existing road car. Trying to get home in a bent car isn't a nice prospect.

Good Luck with the project car.
