Independent servicing in North Wales/ Cheshire
Discussion
Hi all
I'm potentially adding a 911 3.2 Carrera, 1987, to my new Classic and Sports Car Hire company in North Wales, GT Classic Touring (already have Chimaera, Elise and MGA) but slightly worried about servicing. Can any of you good souls recommend an independent in North East Wales (ideally) or Cheshire/ North West who knows there way around older 911s?
Cheers and thanks in advance.

Might be worth sending an email via his profile to sportsandclassic, who is a regular poster on here.
Mike looks after a number of PH members' cars, including my own 993, although I'm not sure whether he professes expertise in older 911s.
He's a top bloke and his prices seem very reasonable. His workshop is near Mobberley (not far from Knutsford) so he may not be as close as you would you prefer.

Or there's always the very well-regarded Ninemeister, up towards (?) Warrington.

Try Johnny at Unit Eleven www.uniteleven.co.uk (01925 852000) in Warrington right next to M6 jucntion 21. You will always deal direct with him (i.e. the man with the spanners) and aircooled 911s are his thing. He prepares my 911SC race car (good results & only ever not finished due to "racing incidents"
never anything mechanical), a few historic rally cars and builds engines & does other work for various renowned Porsche specialists.
The others mentioned on this thread are all good. I use Mike at Sports & Classic for work on more modern machinery and Ninemeister for the race car geometry set-up (becaus they have the kit for this). Johnny used to work with Phil at Tech 9 too, so all these guys know him and respect his work & ability. I'd recommend different places for different people's cars/needs and for you it would be Unit Eleven.

Thanks. That's Johnny, lent against the wheelrack on my trailer.
He came to watch but didn't do any work on the car, on the grounds that he didn't want to get his hands dirty (last time at Oulton he ended up helping out various other 911 drivers' with their race cars in the paddock) and my car was fine and I am quite capable of changing wheels and brakes pads myself
. Seems he was right as I got both wins
This weekend wasn't so good
, but I'll write a race report detailing my massive cock up in another thread.
Do mention me if you get in touch. Thanks.

You would be MUCH better to get an indy to check it over instead. The right ones will know their stuff far better than the main dealer, so stuff shouldn't get missed.
As an example, the owner of a certain Porsche Centre in Cheshire is having a 1980/1981 SC built (or re-built?) for classic/historic rallying - not at his place but at one of the independents mentioned above. Should tell you all you need to know about who's best to use for these cars in his opinion.............
I also had a 993 Turbo checked over that had had an OPC check done on it (not for warranty purposes) and the owner had had all recommended work done. When I had it checked there were loads of things that had gone un-noticed at the OPC, not least of which was that the LSD wasn't working, as well of loads of worn suspension bushes/arms etc, none of which would have passed proper scrutiny only a few months & 4,000 miles earlier. Cost the owner £3000 or so to put right, on top of what he'd spent based on the OPC's report (clutch, brake discs/pads etc i.e. the easy stuff to diagnose).
The car you're looking at should be nothing like as scary repair cost wise but take it to someone who knows them to inspect it, not an OPC. There will undoubtedly be some technicians at OPCs who do know the older cars well, but they will be few and far between so I wouldn't take the risk.
