Ive just bought a 996 carrera 2, and road angel works fine, but the springly cable looks a bit messey hanging over the dashboard to the lighter plug

Does / Has anyone hard wired one in, and if so could they give me some advice as to where to connect into without causing any damage or overloading and how they ran the cable through the dash etc.

Even its if a no, and live the cable, any advice welcomed

thanks
Jon

Sounds like a very messy solution. Easy fix is to buy the newer Road Angel that runs from a rechargeable battery and so no cables (still comes with the same cable so if caught out without enough charge you can always connect it). Think I paid about 275 for mine.

Interesting - I'm just about to pull the trigger on a detector, most likely a Road Angel. I've got the guy coming around on Thursday to fit it, along with the Laser Park Pro "front parking sensor ". I'm still totally undecided whether to have it hardwired, or whether to buy a RA Plus version that has the rechargeable batteries.

I hate the idea of having a dangly cable hanging out of the dash. I also don't really want anything stuck to my window. So what I'm thinking of doing is seeing whether the guy can get a blank template to go where the CD drawer is, and fit the RA into the new blank. Ideally with the option of being able to remove it relatively painlessly, in the event of going to France.

If it works out, I'll let you know

Do Porkers have rechargable torches in the glove like BM's?

I found a BMW original part sold only in the states that coverts the rechargable torch socket into a ciggie lighter and then I just ran the long road angel lead into the glove box. Long shot but you might find porsche do something similar, or I might be talking shite!

You do have the long lead right (not just the curly one)?

Hi

Yes I have both leads, long and curly, but no glove box - nice air bag where there should be one

Earlier post, fitting it into the ciggie wiring, would mean that it was a constant live? hence would be on when I left the car, which I was trying to avoid. I know there is a switched live and earth to the radio, but dont know how to remove it, anyone any ideas?

thanks

I retro-fitted a Becker satnav to my C4 and placed the GPS aerial under the cap that sits over the alarm sensor in the middle of the windscreen. Whilst there (with the centre console on my lap) I took a 12v feed from the back of the cigarette lighter and up through the alarm cover to hardwire my road angel, worked a treat and removed without trace when the car was sold on.

I have done a similar thing with my RA2 - just below the CD trays is a cubby hole. I removed this and modified it to fit the RA, which now slides in. This then means that the RA cannot get a GPS signal, so I ran an external ariel (available from Blackspot) round side of dash, round the base of the windscreen.

The external ariel is just a wire with a small flat black attachment, so the small black attachment is all you see on the dash. On a black dash its not really that obvious. So I have done away with the mounting frame & suckers, they are not needed.

I then then run the power lead out the back of the unit & out the back of the modified cubby hole (have to cut a hole) the wire then exits the dash just below the lighter and plugs in - again rather neat, no wires on display.

Havn't explained it very well but hope you get the idea.

Because the cubby hole is modified (ie cut) I have bought a spare for when I sell the car - was only £20.

R.

Have to admit that was the sort of help I was asking for, but now wishing I hadnt asked. Rest assured, I shall be fitting mine without a flat cap, but prehaps with some buberry and whilst moving for added excitement, hope this enables me to remain!

Jon - I hard wired mine. If you look at the dash end on the drivers side with the door open, there is a removable panel - it's for the fuse box. You need to find a fuse that is on the ignition, something like the radio feed. You can connect the live of your cable to the fused side of this, purely by stripping the wire back, and using the fuse blade to secure. Strip the earth back, and attach to any earthing point (I think there are a few behind there).
The great thing is, that you are already behing the dash, so hiding the wire is fairly simple. Although, my RoadAngel came with a straight wire, as well as the curly one, which was easier to thread thru' any gaps. The great thing with this mod, is how easy it is to reverse.
Hope this helps.....thumbup

Did you have no 'unused' button blanks - those little switches just don't look right. Still, its your car...

I like buttons, me

Good thing is that they're on the CD storage fascia, so if I ever sell the car I can always put another one in for peanuts.
