Hi all,

I'm in the process of looking for an early (98/99) 996 and was just looking for some advice on a couple of points.

The 3 choices I seems to have are the Manaul Carerra 2, The Tiptronic Carrera 2 S and also a Carerra 4.

I was just wondering what the performance difference was between these models as I'm getting conflicting information everywhere I look?

From what I can tell the C2 & C4 Manual's are actually slower than a Boxster S with a 0-60 of 5.8 secs VS the Boxster at 5.5 seces ?
Also I'd expect the Tiptronic C2 model to be even slower due to transmission losses etc however I see these have better quoted 0-60 times than the manaul? Am I right in thinking that the Carerra 2 Tiptronics are all S models and hence have a bit of extra power 320bhp vs 300 ?
Are these figures realistic or has anyone got some better info ?

Finally what your opinions on the best to own for reliability and cost etc ? I'd assuming the C2 Manual would be lest complicated than the tippy and the C4 so would probably be more reliable, is this the case ?

Regards

JP

My old 98 C2 tip is at www.kennydunn.co.uk in Edinburgh, and it is a belter, you will find it hard to get a better one.

There is the old argument man V tip, the manual is faster off the mark but once on the move the tip is faster.

how are you going to use it, I prefered the tip, but try both and take your pick, running costs are the same.

£350 for a service £100 a tyre £550 insurance and 20 MPG.

the "S" you refer to when dealing with the 996 carrera is only a name given to indicate its a tiptronic

i think you will find the C2 is faster than a boxster. Autocar's offical figures for the 3.4 engine are o-60 5.1 seconds, 177 top speed.

the C2 manual is faster than a tip.

the tip "S" does not have a power upgrade, it has the same 300 hp engine as the manual

the model line up for the 996 carrera is

3.4 300 hp

C2 manual & tip
C2 cab maunal & tip
C4 manual & tip
C4 manual & tip cab
Gt3 3.6 manual
Turbo 3.6 twin turbo - 420hp (manual & tip)
GT2 3.6 manual

"facelift" 3.6 from 2002 MY

C2 manual/tip/coupe/cab/targa
C4 manual/tip/coupe/cab
C4S as above
Turbo manual/tip/coupe/cab
GT3
GT2
GT3RS

Thanks for that chaps, cleared things up for me nicely!

I'd prefer the C2 manual based on that, not a fan of tippys if I'm honest and dont really see the need for the C4.

Thanks for the Rec on your old motor Jonny but at 26k for a 98R its going to have to be a belter !!!

Just finally whats likely to be my biggest worry when buying ? From what I can tell the rear oil seal is the most likely cause of a big bill, anything else I should look for ? Obviously I'm aiming for FPSH and circa 60k miles or below if I can get it.

bought a 1999 C4 tip cab with low milage, its been a good car, however I paid over the odds but I think it will pay off in the long run. I would however before you buy get a independant inspector to look at it. May cost £100 but when you are spending that money worth it. Also at that age you will not I suspect have any repair insurance. You should be prepared for the unexpected. Last service at a Independant cost £1300, had to have a new header tank, coil packs and a steering linkage. None were actually critical but if you want to keep it in top condition these are the things that you will have to attend to. Certainly dont want to put you I would certainly do it again.

Thanks for that, I'm now actually looking at stretching my budget to circa 25k for a Cab if I can find a good one, seems to be a few nice ones advertised on here actaully. I'm pretty much banking on circa £1k per service so anything less will be a bonus !

Mate

You got more to worry about than the poxy RMS.
RMS is 6 hours labour and the seal is £8.
WHEN IS THIS GOING TO GET THROUGH TO PEOPLE ?

Your engine blowing up is what you need to worry about on an old 98 car.
Save up and get a newer car.
Get a 2001 facelift and get an OPC warranty.
These old cars will be unsaleable soon as they come out of warranty limits(9 years)

I disagree with Clump, I got a great 98 996 - with nearly 12 months warranty, which can be extended for another year if i so choose.

just shop around, there are a lot of dogs at the low price range, but if your patient you can find a good one

I beleive Ferrari's all require a belt change every 2 years or x amount of miles costing 3-5k. Are these unsaleable?

Puzelled ... the OPC warrantee can be extended up to the car's 9th bithday - i.e. so that its last year's warrantee will take it up until it is 10 years old. So if yoou have (say) 11 months left on your warrantee now it will expire in March 2008, at which point it will be past its 9th birthday and unwarranteeable via the OPC. Of course, you could join the Hartech scheme or something instead ...

its 9th birthday is septemeber 07 - its up for renewal in july 07, so i can extend it for another 12 months
