Hi,

Can somebody please give me the performance specs for this car, as i have been searching but to no avail. I was looking at changing my TVR Chimaera 500 and wondered what the difference in performance would be.

Steve.

986 Box S Facelift:
260bhp
228lb/ft
1320kgs
200bhp/ton
0-60 = 5.5 secs
VMax = 164mph

987 Box S:
276bhp
236lb/ft
1345kgs
208bhp/ton
0-60 = 5.4
VMax = 166mph

I don't have the figures for the pre-facelift 986 S although I know it has only 252bhp or the facelift 987 S although they have 291bhp.

On paper the stats will not look as good as a TVR but it is in the drive that these cars really excel.

The Vmax may be 164mph but you need a straight longer than 2 miles in which to get there. At Brunters I hit 152mph and it was utterly breathless at this point.

The performance difference between a Chim 500 and a 986 Box S facelift (like mine) will be quite noticeable. I have a Chim 450 too and you can tell the difference in straight line acceleration alright. Personally I would say, though, that you can live with it. The car is still properly quick 0..60 in 5.5 ain't shabby even if it isn't the 4.5 of the Chim500.

However you will notice some other things too:

1) It goes around corners properly. I mean really properly. Shit to a blanket properly.
2) Its a LOT smoother and you can use the power more easily.
3) In the wet - no contest. Absolutely no contest even a little.
4) The roof panel struggle is replaced with a little button and electric motors. The roof doesn't conflict with the luggage space in any way either so even if you are on a two week holiday with loads of bags the roof goes on and off in 12 seconds every time guaranteed.
5) Its German not British. Its made in Stuttgart by men in white coats not in Blackpool by men with hammers. Build quality is utterly superb.
6) Got the same amount of boot space as the Chim.

Things you will also notice that you might miss:

1) Its quiet. Its a lovely sound but it IS very quiet. Sounds brilliant on track when hooning but in day to day use its not the sort of noise that gets small children to spontaeneously burst into tears like the Chim does.

2) Its German not British. Its made in Stuttgart by men in white coats not in Blackpool by men with hammers. Its got soul but you'll have to get to to know it very, very well before you appreciate that. The Chim just bursts with character...

3) Got the same amount of boot space as the Chim. But its in two parts. That Chim boot is surprisingly enormous.

Mail me if you have any specific questions. I've owned both cars for six years now so I think I know what I'm talking about.

Don - were you going by the speedo at Brunters?

There is a knack to getting a VMax out of a Box S. You really need to run it pretty much to the redline in 5th before changing up. 6th alone will not power you past 160ish mph. I saw a 172mph on the speedo (I had no GPS to get an actual) in my Box S.

With roof down you will pretty much hit a brickwall at 160mph.

A few years ago, I had a 5.0 Chimeara, whilst my wife was driving a 986 Boxster S, which we ran cuncurrently for about two years, before I saw the light and bought a Porka. Whilst the TVR had much more grunt and straicht line speed, the Boxster made up with far better handling, and was quicker on the bendy roads.

Also, could always guarantee arriving with the Boxster, rather than teh three times had to rely on the RAC with the TVR!

Ding. All good points.

It also seems to me that TVR figures are optimistic (read dump clutch brutally), whereas Porsche figures are clinical (easily repeatable).

I have a 986 Box S and have driven hundreds of miles in a 4.0 and 5.0 chim. It felt between the two in terms of raw SLJ performance. But the german wins hands down as soon as it's twisty or wet.

Yep. By the speedo. I obviously hadn't quite sorted the technique, then....

Hi Steve, I changed my std Griff 500 for a 2002 BoxsterS six months ago. It does not have the raw power and torque of the big V8 but IMHO it makes up for it in the handling and comfort dept. As I am sure you are aware the porker beats any TVR for build quality! Its the best all round sports car I have driven.

Don't quite understand that as the lighter car with the bigger engine and narrower tyres will require less rpm on a launch than a Boxster to get the best time ...

Wouldn't say that TVR's figures were optimistic, just that the press cars could have had race engines in them rather than customer spec ones ... scratchchin

I am definatly leaning that way now, i do think the TVR is quicker, more aggresive, louder, and more exclusive, as in i very rarely see another one when im out, and iv just been to a meeting in Derby, about 80 mile round trip and iv seen 3 Boxsters today, but as said the Porsche is a more all round car, bearing in mind when i got the TVR i insured it on a limited milage of 3000 a year, and iv done 3xs that so a more all round car might be better with the miles it will be doing.

Still thinking and banghead

If you're after exclusive and fast, what about a RUF Boxster? Essentially a boxster with 911 powerplant. 3.4, 3.6 and 3.8 all available!

Or a bosxter S twin turbo conversion:

287 KW (390 HP) at 5.900 rpm
510 Nm at 5.100 rpm

Just to add that I got an indicated 171mph out of mine, again I redlined to fifth before changing.

I've been having the same thoughts about changing to a 987 S, but having driven a few, just can't bring myself to let go of the Tiv. I just know I'd regret it......

Peak power or torque though probably isn't delivered right on the redline though, more like about 6k revs, so redlining at 7k (?) is not the best way to get max thrust ?

The trick is to keep your engine in the meaty part of the torque curve, as acceleration curve == torque curve - meaning if your torque peak is at 4,5000rpm, that's the RPM your car accelerates the hardest. Of course the lower the gear, the better the multiplier. So what to do then? The rule of thumb is to shift when you will be at an RPM where the car will make more torque AFTER you shift than in your current gear.
