My boss is having starting problems on his MY99 996.

The engine starts ok when it is cold, but seems to have real trouble turning over when hot.

The battery is pretty new and a test of the alternator shows a voltage of 13.2 - 15.1 volts when idling & air con off etc.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance thumbup

What type of starting problems? If it doesn't crank at all, after a clunking sound, it could be starter motor. But you need to be a lot more specific. Mike at SPorts & classics is your man for online diagnosis!!

It turns over very slowly - too slow to fire. The alarm sounds due to the voltage drop.

No clunking & it's fine when the engine is cold.

I'm in Lincolnshire. Where abouts is Sports & Classics please?

Coil pack as in starter solenoid? Sorry, to me a coil pack is the chuffing unreliable thing that sits on the top of my VW R32's spark plugs irked

Cheers for the linky, Gary bow

if your getting a degradation of spark strength when the engines hot this suggests to me that its the coil pack or ht leads.

coil packs are supposed to be replaced every 2-3 years so nerv might be your man, if your into that sort of thing.

The car runs ok hot or cold, it is just cranking the engine over hot that seems to be the problem.

Apologies if I've been a bit vague - the car isn't mine so my information is only second hand. Unfortunately the boss certainly won't let me test drive it...

Oh, and thanks for the tips, guys thumbup

Hi

im in knutsford cheshire by the way.

Just a long shot but if the alarm is going off because of a voltage drop and the car cannot start or turns over very slowly but ok when cold.....this is strange but what voltage is the alternator putting out ?

Is it boiling the battery and when everything cools its ok....Other thing is a high resistance through something...

Bit of a difficult 1 really.

Cheers Mike

Up to 15.1V but normally around 13.6V. He did say that it fluctuated a bit.

Knutsford isn't just "up the road" from here! Shame I can't borrow the car as my in-laws live in Mobberley... hehe

Sounds like knackered battery. Go to any tyre and battery merchant and get a free test on it.
