I was looking at the K&N website and all the K&N products that you have to buy to clean and re-oil the filter. I have one of those induction kits on my car and I was wondering if anyone had any tips for cleaning and re-oiling that make use of more readily availble stuff. What I'm really asking is, do I have to buy the K&N brand cleaner and oil to do the job?

I had Piper Cross stuff for the old K&N. Now I have an ITG filter, soap and water.

I tried the K+N cleaner and it smelt exactly like? Dont say shite!....no, it smelt just like traffic film remover.
Turns out that it cleans as good as, if not better than K+N cleaner, and if you buy a big 25litre tub...man, youll be everyones "best mate"..
As for the filter oil, id be inclined to stick with(no pun ) the manufacturers stuff.
Oh and dont wash them from the outside in...the dirt gets washed into the fabric and sucked nicely into ur engine otherwise. Wash from inside out, under the hot tap with your cleaning solution applied....and let it dry on its own..no air lines!!
Hope this helps.
