I went to pick up a 996TT yesterday, had it inspected, a few of the usuals appeared, pads/discs/maf/service needed, indie agreed to all and done work at their garage with porsche parts then took to local OPC for 'annual service' /check to get stamp...
I Turned up ,all looked fine, apart from no tax.. Strange,as I sent through insurance for them to get which was agreed... Bear in mind this has been going on for the last 3/4 weeks...
Turns out they had issues at PO (only decided to get tax the day I turn up
) as no log book, prev. owner had it on private plate, changed it over and between them/him/now its got lost, indie filled out DVLA forms with my details for new one to be sent to me...
This left me in the middle of no where (250miles from home). I had no expectation of not driving it away..
Cut long story short, they lent me a car from their yard to use until tax/lb sorted...
Apart from that I also found it stange that there was NO paperwork with the car apart from usual porsche manuals/service book/2 mots which were in order. He said some customers just don't keep paperwork, I still find this strange on a car of this price...
Anyway, today he's managed to get tax with a letter from prev. owner stating logbook lost., in conversation I ask if the car was an import...short pause, yes he replied!!!.. Aparrently a personal import. Apart from being annoyed they didn't inform me, how exactly does this effect the price if any? Also do I need to inform my insurance?
To be honest I'm getting more and more cautious due to lack of professionalism and paperwork, are they trying to hide anything else
Its a shame as it 'looks' a good car and inspection went well, but I'm not sure about parting the best part of £50k with all this crap so early on. Surely buying a car should be fun

crikey mate i really feel for you!!
Is the car listed as a C16? ie under the bonnet and in the service booklet?
sometimes V5's do take time to come through especially if the car was previously registered on a cherished plate, however, at this end of the market you could expect the dealer to have got everything into place before you we due to arrive and collect.

Not that suprising cars like this have often been owned by super wealthy people who aren't really bothered about keeping paperwork as any drop in residuals is neither here nor there to them. Also a good chance that any servicing is done for them by their P.A. who would probally file any invoices in the bookwork V.A.T. etc.
I wouldn't be to impressed by a letter from the previous owner to explain any problems though not really worth the paper its written on.
Hope it all turns out well for you.

I do 'feel' for the guy, but the fact he cocked up big after 4weeks of me trying to ensure all was well is really starting to irritate me, esp now I find its import...
Anyway, basically got this w/e to decide, I said I would of thought some sort of incentive to deal would help!.. mind you he did lend me an M3 to use which put him up a peg in my books
no porsche though

If it's a C16 car then it's a UK car collected in another country, so same value as one collected in the UK.
Uck me, do you keep this in a file for cut/paste specials

He's right, though. If it's a C16, there's no cause for any alarm or undue panic, and your second hand 996 is worth no less than any other IMO. A lot of people seem to equate 'personal import' with 'fell off the back of a lorry', but it ain't so. They weren't making 911s in the UK last time I looked. Reading imports C16s too.
If I'm buying from a dealer & paying the premium involved I would hope that much of the hassle has been taken out of the buying process otherwise you may as well go private take extra hassle & save some dosh!
If its a C16 import then providing it was directly imported to be first registered in the UK then all should be fine, as an example my other halfs Boxster S is C16 import, but the foreign OPC stamp sits proudly in the service book, so before purchase we faxed them & received written verification that it was an proper official Porsche product supplied new to Uk spec. The owner then provided us with the import paperwork & all tied in, the result is it has the same value as an OPc supplied car. Without the paperwork it is worth a little less but not a huge amount.
If you only asked if it was an import after getting the dealer to do all the required work on the car then I think you should forget that part anyway!
What worries me is after 4 weeks (your words) of purchase foreplay the proper paperwork isn't there to allow the car to be taxed, and for the situation to occur when they knew you were coming.... not PROFESSIONAL. That would make me worry about the rest of the promises made! If it is a well known independent with a good reputation & you can talk to the last owner & get reassurance then I am sure all will be fine, if it isn't I personally would walk away!

C16 means it was produced for the UK market, doesnt have to have been imported to be C16
Yup. Mine has "C16" along with the other option codes, on the label stamp under the Vehicle Identification section in the Guarantee and Maintenance book. However, the stamp of the authorised dealer belongs to an OPC in the North. Couldn't be more of a UK OPC car than that - as confirmed by the OPC when I phoned to check, prior to purchase.
All the issues around documents and service receipts etc could be innocent. As above, original receipts could have been kept for VAT purposes and I can understand the issue with the log book as the DVLA are feckin useless!
If you really want the car, I'd kick up a fuss and use it to bargain further or get something thrown in and threaten to walk from the deal ...

Agree with all above, to be honest I had not even thought of asking, I thought it was a requirement to mention it was an import if from a dealer.. The import paperwork is a good idea, I'll ask about that... Looking about quickly for other TT's (black/black) there's bugger all about in the price range. I'm pretty much stuck in the middle of this deal (1k dep., have his m3 etc etc) with only this morning to really decide, which is the bit that grinds me, having limited time to think about how to cover myself in the deal, it just shouldn't be like this FFS, 50k purchase should come with hoke&cores
I'm going to try to leverage the price a little more, but last time I tried he said they're down to 500 left in the deal..... just enough
