Off to Charles Dunn's tomorrow to play with the Ultima.
Apart from the Ultima and my piggy bank, can you guys think of anything that I need to take to get the most from the day??
Specifically, I'm going there to address the seemed overfueling, the stalling under hard braking and try somehow to get her idling in that same kinda area, from stop to stop.
PS Best way to Wooburn Green from Dorking? Is it to go past Crazy's House??

He may change his mind when he sees where the exhausts point with the clip open.
It's alright when just on tickover but power runs will not do at all.

Yeah Steve, agree with you both. It's not as if it's difficult to get it off - especially with a ramp.
Spose it depends if he fiddles (or what ever the technical name for it is) and then tests on the road. Or if its more of a garage based affair.
I'll make sure we get a lot of road time coz it's there where the hiccups manifest themselves, under Gs, not on rollers.
Spose I should hit the sack.......na, few mins more.

what about a video camera?
also if he does any dyno print outs, get them in table format as well. you will then be able to see what the corection factors are of the dyno, and should be abld to compare with you AS printouts

I'll see what I can do.

OK, here goes.
Up with the sparras at 5.30, and a leisurely blat over to Wooburn Green (went A24/M25/M4/M404(N) then into Bourne End and on into Wooburn Green).
Got to Charles Dunn's and thought I'd stumbled into the film set of some Guy Ritchie gangster flick! You almost have to drive through an old factory unit to get to Charles' place. Thankfully Dunn Jnr was already there.
Wayne, Mr Dunn's workshop is a little like BS Motorsport's....but with less pork.
So met Charles, and filled him in on the history. He is Gail's (American Speed)man in the UK if there is anything that Gail thinks needs looking at over here.
The list was:
1 Mixture check
2 Idle difficult to contol
3 Throttle pedal action (poss linked with above)
4 Stalling on hard deceleration (so you are forced to learn H&T
)
and
5 Oil leak.....yeah I know.....nice!
Even before I'd finished explaining, Charles had said, "you won't be needing that" pointing to the choke. I though long and hard for a suitable intelligent techno response.....then a second later said, "so does everyone have it off then?" His answer was enough for me to agree.
He took off the carb, emptied it and removed the choke. (How much for a bag of choke these days?). Refitted it, adjusted the throttle cable (I had too much slack), checked the float levels; which were spot on and then hooked up a vacuum cleaner...or something like that. A big comic dial on a tube fitted to the carb.
Fiddled with that for some time with the engine idling then stalling and idling again....*repeat many time*.
Then I think that was it. Oh yeah - Steve, you'll be pleased to know that Charles took down the threaded bar to an acceptable level!! I went for a blat with Gavin (I hope I got that right - eek) Found it ran well, but still wasn't idling right.
So, we agreed that ot would go back fo a look at the leak, and to look at a better throttle linkage that might get the spindle returning to zero.
On the way home it idled all over the show again, from 600 to 1500, and stalled a couple of times into roundabouts. So we'll have to rethink something there ( I fink there are may posts on this one - but it really makes me mad that this is a problem for so many of us.)
Dropped into Parc Ferme and P1 on the way home and just when I wanted to show off my engine bay to P1 guys, the rear clip red catch release handle came away from the cable in my hand....quality!!
So Charles Dunn? Yep, pleased. Work in progress me thinks. He knows his old school onions.
That's all. Back home now and put her to bed.......

That was a long drive P
Hope you didn't break down !
Did he cure the stalling probs then ? I'm particularly interested in whether you notice any before/after power difference and mpg too come to think of it, probably a bit early to know that just yet tho i spose.
D'oh forget the above then.

Hi Pete sounds good ,have you got a wedge plate fitted underneath the carb to level it ? i found that fitting one fixed the stalling issues as if you look at the carb its tipping forward (i think ?) also are the tickover issues down to the butterflys not returning to the same position when you lift off ? or is it down to setup ? simon

Hi Simon,
I'll check the wedge plate later. I saw the plate undet the carb when it was removed, but didn't think to see if it was wedged. Yeah, think the spindle comes to a rest at different positions. Charles is gonna take a look at it next time it goes in.
The stalling and the idling are the only two thinks that detract fom the car. The stalling is actually a safety issue. Needs fixing fast.
Can someone direct me to the best thread that talked about the stalling fix?
Cheers
Pete
Pete - you can try the jet extensions to cure the stalling.
I had problems with both my carbs with the butterflies not returning to the same place. There always seemed to be too much play in the splindles to me? You'd think with such a critical bit, it would be engineered to cope!
Pain in the bum to keep blipping the throttle to get the idle to drop (sort of snapping the butterflies back in place). Try fitting heavier return springs too. I had 2 on the back and one on the pedal with teflon lined cable and that improved things alot.
Or bin it and go EFI
