Why do all the R1s etc want to race me ?
Discussion
Whilst driving in my GT2 over the last few days there seems to be a number
of these leather clad nutcases sitting on my tail ( must be the ring sticker !)
then with a sneaky drop into 3rd and hey presto i catch them on the hop and they disappear
for a few seconds till they find a lower gear
lot of thumbs ups and nods !
never happens in the Land Rover Defender !!!

My theory is that it is rare that they find cars which it is even possible they can have a little joust with using more than their fist couple of gears.
I'd take it as a compliment.
That said I've come across a few badly ridden superbikes in the last couple of weeks and it bugs that i don't have the power to blast them on the straight bits but mid way through the next set of twisties find them wobbling all over the place doing a good few MPH less than i want to be doing, only for them to pull out 30+ meters as soon as we get to the next straight. Not a problem you have I'm sure

I've had loads of fun in the GT2 with fast bikes. They're obviously shocked by the performance, but it's always ended in thumbs and nods. Mutual respect for truly quick machines.
Same here
had a trip over to Specialist Cars at Malton on Monday and had a superb joust with a sports bike from Gt Broughton all the way to Helmsley, he had the jump in a couple of places due to risky overtaking but I think he was well pi$$ed as he saw me glued to his rear tyre through the twisties and pushing him on in the straights...
These cars are awesome, just take your time getting to know its limits and you'll have a blast.

Had great fun with a sportsbike coming up the M11 a couple of days ago. Dropped into 4th, full turbo action and looked in the mirror. He was crouched on the tank with his throttle arm visibly wringing every last drop out of the bike and still getting further away. All ended cordially, though.
Having ridden big bikes myself for 20 years it is great to finally have a car with performance in the same league (and that's just in a straight line - around the corners the 911tt will win every time.)

That's strange, any 911 (inc GT2) I've met with my ZX12R on the autobahn are always going backwards rapidly in my mirrors (and they're definetly trying their best). There's a big diference between a 600cc "sports bike" and the full on bikes with 1000-1300cc. With the exception of a dedicated heavily modified track car, no 911 stands a chance (in a straight line) against a top sports (or even sport touring) bike. It's all about power to weight - for example, ZX12R is 850bhp/tonne, ZZR1400 is 880hp/tonne ..... GT2 is 350hp/tonne.....R1 is nearly 1000hp/tonne
and these bikes have the equivalent of 650-750LBs of torque in relation to their weight.

yes but in the real world it comes down to a number of things doesn't it:
torque per tonne - to get the jump
traction
being in the right gear
wind resistance - the rider is sat up
of course if the race was long enough AND in a straight line AND the speeds weren't too high then the bike would walk/run away - thankfully there's an opportunity for truly fast cars with fantastic in-gear times (e.g. 911 turbos) to have a little play...
Think you might find aerodynamics plays a part at silly speeds. From my own experience of both bikes and cars, I would also venture to make the comment that it takes considerably more balls to do big numbers on a sportsbike than in a quick car. I have NEVER seen a bike stick with it above 150 whereas I have been overtaken by a Ferrari 550 when I was doing 160 in a 997 C2S.
IMHO a lot of sportsbike riders are more into high street posing and doing 60-70 around town than in extracting the performance of their chosen vehicle on the open road (mainly because it frightens them.)

Picture the scene outside Lyon pulled into a petrol station
just collected my Mrs from the airport on the way to SPA short skirt and all that
in my GT3 RS ( 3 years ago )load of Brit bikers on top machines
" Hello lads " etc as I left - I said to the MRS belt up !!
I saw about 10 headlights closing very fast
( felt like that scene out of mad max )
after 10 miles + and silly speeds there was only one left glued to my bumper his head wobbling
all over the place
I was very Impressed ( Ive had all sorts of bikes RC30s/GSXRRs RS 250s etc )
lots of thumbs up after that

Blimey, My Mrs would have killed me
Interesting thread. Never had a car fast enough to have fun with bikes in a straight line but used to be able to keep up with them in the twisties when I had the CS.
Dont know much about fast bikes but are they becomming more affordable now because there seems to be more inexperienced riders than there used to be.

I have no doubt that an R1/GSXR can outblat any Porsche.... but around a track like Donny/Silverstone, how does a top-end sports bike perform out of the box compared to a GT3/2?
Bren's 7:32 around the 'Ring was pretty amazing... so, approx 20secs difference around the Ring suggest a small difference around the typical track?

Ive come on here looking to find a post about a blast a friend and I had with silver 911 Turbo reg starting BK5*... on the M summat Saturday just gone for approx 15miles
Hats off to the driver and the car, he was right behind us at an indicated 190MPH and pulled off every overtaking manoeuvre we did...I deliberately fell back behind it to see what it accelerated like and I needed full bore acceleration to stay with it.
I have a Hayabusa and my mate was on a GSXR Thou and we were both seriously impressed, by far and away the fastest car ive ever come across. I do not doubt that the car and driver have humbled many fast bikes.

might be worth noting at this point that lap of the ring was in the wet :O

For example, relative to their weight:
ZX12R - 650LB/FT
ZZR1400 - 740LB/FT
I'm talking about performance in a straight line, not curves where obviously a car has more grip etc.
Acceleration from speeds such as 100-130mph favours thees kind of bikes considerably and virtually any road car (maybe except the Veryon) have no chance. Sure, eventually when you get to speeds in excess of 170mph, it's hard to maintain on a bike. It's nothing to do with a limitation of the bike but the rider with a sustained 170mph wind blast
For sheer roll-on acceleration, no road going 911 will come close.

I agree that on paper no car should stand a chance against a big bike, the figures are in a different league. All I can say is hand on heart in the real world there doesn't seem to be much difference. Of course I may NEVER have come across a biker who wants to give it full beans.

no its not. above 100mph its all about frontal area x Cd x v^2.
as speeds increase weight becomes far less important than power to drag where the car is better. for example my gt2 375bhp/t will ABSOLUTELY ANIHILATE my zx6r with the same power to weight. thats before bravery is an issue.. and adding a rider to your power to weights will knock a third off...
but granted not much to keep up with more manly bikes on a motorway zzz

I agree about the frontal area. The bike maybe taller but it is much narrower, so the frontal area is smaller on a bike.
I own a 993tt with close to 500hp and 500LBS/FT and it is VERY fast. However, my ZX12R is in different league in a roll-on situation for speeds between 30-150mph
