A mate went to look at a 996 recently that was badged as a "Carrera S". Got us thinking, did Porsche ever actually make a 996 Carrera 2S or was this a 'fake'?

As far as I understand, the ranges are:

993: Carrera 2, Carrera 2S, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S
997: Carrera 2, Carrera 2S, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S
996: Carrera 2, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S ... but no Carrera 2S

So did Porsche ever make a two wheel drive "S" version of the 996? If so, don't think I've ever seen one. If not, how come?

Cheers.

I saw a 996 "S" driving around a couple of times where I used to live in central London. It was an Arctic Silver car, looked like a normal C2 with the S from the C4S badge stuck on to me. As far as I'm aware they didn't make one.

Correct, they never did a 996 C2S. As to why they never did, I am as mythed as everyone else... it would have been on my list to snap-up... I am a big fan of 2-WD Porkas.

But that would not be badged as an S. No 996 2S made. Even the 997 S isn't the "S" of old - it used to signify widebody, now more power.

In that case I should change my nickname to 2something S.

There's a facelift C2 with Carrera Aerokit in/around Stratford-upon-Avon. It's narrow-bodied with black callipers and is bizarrely badged as a Carrera 4S

Who are these people trying to kid?

But, strangely, if you look at the OPC 996 Service price leaflet there is a specific column of prices for a '2S' with different prices to the regular 2 , 4 and 4S !!

And, if you wanted a real anorak answer ... technically the 3.4l 2wd Carrera from 97 to 2001 is not called a Carrera 2, it is just a Carrera. So the options are actually .... Carrera, Carrera 2, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S.

Found it ... see http://opc.cmwinteractive.com/service

and scan down to the (say) the bit where it says front brake pads ... £314 for a 2S

well done Porsche, there should be an OPC policy that any sad idiot who badges there car up a notch gets charged an additional premium for any service or maintenance, even if the model does not exist
