Where to lift an engine ?
Discussion
Morning all,
I need some advice please - do you know where to lift a standard Amerspeed engine ? I want to get it off the stand so I can fit the mountings, adaptor plate, flywheel etc.
At the back, the manual suggets using two of the 3/8 inch holes where the adaptor plate bolts on. But if you do this, you can't fit the adaptor plate !
Option 2 would be to use the 3/8 inch holes but then drop the engine down to the ground - is the sump strong enough to support the engine ? It seems fairly light aliminium to me but I could be wrong ...
The front lifting point seems to be the water pump - I guess you thread some rope around where it attaches to the block ?
Many thanks
Tony.

Thanks for the reply Crafty,
Yes, there are four 3/8 inch holes in each end of the cylinder heads - four shortish bolts from the adaptor plate (plus some big washers) should make it easy to lift up from there. Have you tried this yourself ? Anyone else out there tried this ?
Love the road sign by the way
Regards
Tony.

Hi Tony
When taking my engine in and out I find it easier to line up one side first then put the bolt through. Then lower the engine to line up the other one and put the bolt in that side. The second one can require a little persuasion to get it in.
Another thing Tony have you read the threads with regards the mounts rubbing on the flat mounting plates. Most people have ground off the lugs from the engine mounts to stop this happening. You can send me a mail if you want my phone number to talk about this.
Regards Dave

I bolted one side in then I cut the head off a longer bolt and ground the other end to a taper. I used that as a drift for the second mount and drove it out the other side using the engine mount bolt.... this way the threads on the bolt dont get damaged as the tapered drift brings the mount holes into line.

Dave / Crafty,
Thanks again for your quick replies !
Dave, I've been banished from the garage by the missus and the kids for the rest of the day but I'll check out the grinding of the lugs thread you mentioned - I'm sure I have seen it on the site a while back - if I can't find it I'll email you tomorrow & get in touch. Cheers !
All the best,
Tony
