Actually got a wave from a Porsche driver today - 996 Turbo.

It's my first wave in 2 months. Even waved at a Silver 997 C2 that lives just down the road from me two days running, and the bugger still didn't acknowledge me - just looked.

Bit different from the Lotus where everyone waved, but I guess most people who buy Porsches aren't enthusiasts?

I suppose it's because a) half the Porsches owned by people who think it's a sleek looking BMW and wonder why you're waving and b) your hand would drop off if you waved at every Porsche you passed/saw.

When I had a Caterham, spotting another on the road was cause to wave, dance a Morris dance and stop off at the nearest pub for a pint of nut brown ale whilst stories about trunions and pushrods were swapped. Now even those feckers are everywhere.

I bet the Zonda owners still wave at each other tho'

Seems to be more common with the older cars. I always get thumbs up / flashed lights / wave etc from fellow 964 drivers, and nearly always from those in SCs etc (and always reciprocate, obviously). Less so from 993ers and not a single flash from the fried-egg lamp brigade. Miserable b@ggers...

I think its further aggravated by the poor Boxter fodder
who, beside not knowing what 911 means,

are further confounded by which is the front or back,
of their soapy shaped cars

I was waved at by a Cayman driver on Wednesday, I waved back more in shock than anything else. 200 yards round the corner saw a 997, thought I would give it a go - just got a blank stare Its certainly rare to get a wave - being honest I wouldnt initiate wave but I will happily wave back.

Sadly the nescafe handshake tends to be more common now the roof is off more regularly (from drivers of lesser marques obviously)! Although to be fair, its still fairly infrequent.

Not neccesarily the Boxster but the fact that maybe 75% of modern Porsche drivers do so because of the badge as opposed to the heritage and thrill of driving them means they have no understanding of the fading cameraderie that exists between likeminded owners

Its a shame, I suppose its potentially more common in Boxster drivers becuase they are cheaper to get into? However I must admit to knowing one or two modern 911 owners who know next to nothing about the cars they drive or the heritage of the brand which does get my goat.

Were you the driver of the 997 I waved at? Perhaps the blank look was actually a look of disgust a being waved at by a mere Boxster driver... how dare I!

Still harsh!

I have just bought a Boxster to realise a childhood dream of owning a Porsche for the love of driving it, not poncing around about the badge. Unfortunately, as it has to act as my daily driver it was the most appropriate purchase for me as I could not stretch to a newer 996 / 997. However, I have tried waving at a few other Porsches, but the drivers seem to be far too grumpy / self absorbed / interested in being seen to wave back. If you are ever in North Hants & see a blue Box S bombing about, give me a wave......

I dont think its harsh, Ithink its an accurate reflection on todays Porsche owners, I dont single out Boxster owners and indeed as time goes on its likely that more Boxsters will come into enthusiasts hands due to the relative pricing.

You are far more likely to get flashed/waved at by a 924/44/28 3.2 owner than a more modern car.

I've had a 924S, 944S2 and a993 before my current 996tt and have to say being waved at by anyone in anewer car was an absolute rarity

I'll wave at anyone, me!! nuts

Seriously though, you do have a very valid point. Working in the Thames Valley, I do see an awful lot of newer Porsches bombing about, who's owners appear as if they have just realised that they can get one on the company lease. Try as I might, I can never raise a wave or even a hint of recognition from these..

A couple of years ago, my wife had a Subaru Impreza and I was stunned by how EVERY time we met another on the road, a friendly wave was exchanged (sometime even from the arch enemy - Evo XXX111)

Having owned a Boxster and in the first couple of weeks happily waving at every other Porker, but I got very little reaction at all. Time has moved on and I've now changed/upgraded/spent loads of cash on a 993 C2S. I shall resume my waving at anything older than a 996 or non-Boxster (but will happily respond if I get a wave first).

I guess my view is (possibly incorrectly) that 997s and 996s are less of an enthusiast car (don't flame me, I realise this is a massive generalisation) and I'm not so sure that some of those drivers recognise the Porsche brand in the older cars. Perhaps they think that my car was cheap... eek

Bottom line is, I'm having fun. My car puts a huge grin on my face, even if I'm not driving it, I can look out of the window and feel good about it. So not getting waved at will not dampen my enthusiasm for the marque.

All IMHO of course

Great car is the Boxster. Nice roof-down drive out in the sun tonight, brilliant handling, plenty fast. You anti-Box lot BORE. Please stop this stoopid opinionating, it only shows you to be vain.

I am all for being friendly and will always wave back, but in London if you wave at everyone in a Porsche (even excluding Cayennes) you wouldn't spend much time with both hands on the wheel ...

In Holmfirth today and a 911 passed me coming the other way both of us Guards red, passed at two feet, both cars immaculate, I thought he has to at least nod but no. I was completely invisible (Boxster). What a knob.

It is a bit of a desert out there in Porsche world compared to the days of TVR ownership. Every other fellow Tiv used to acknowledge you but few other Porks seem to bother -particularly the newer ones that just blank you or stare disdainfully when you wave.
I'll go with the theory about lack of genuine enthusiast ownership on the part of newer vehicles- being bought purely for the cachet of the badge.
Having now become bitter & twisted I have resolved to address this justified generalisation by pre-emptively giving the 'w*nker' sign at every 997 and- just to be on the safe side- every other Porsche as well. I feel this will strike a blow for real Porsche enthusiasts and will improve inter-porsche relations no end.
