Aerosol spraying tips
Discussion
I'm in the middle of painting a plastic mirror housing. The original paint had flaked off. This time, I've taken it back to the bare plastic and applied a plastic primer. The first layer of metallic basecoat has been applied. My questions are:
1. How long should I leave it between basecoat applications?
2. How many basecoat applications should I make? The first has covered well.
3. How many coats of lacquer should I apply?
4. How long between the last basecoat layer and the first coat of lacquer?
5. How long between coats of lacquer?
6. Should I be doing any other preparation work between coats (eg. rubbing down)?
The paint I've bought was mixed up by a paintshop suppliers and says it's for professional use only, so that's me scuppered already.....

Depending on weather/temperature leave 5 to 10 minutes between coats (hotter temp = shorter time).
3 good coats of metallic base should be enough.
Leave last coat maybe 30 minutes before starting to apply lacquer. Roughly speaking the more lacquer you apply the deeper the finish, but 3 to 5 coats should be enough, again leaving 5 to 10 min between.
Wouldn't personally bother rubbing down between coats, and certainly not on metallic base, unless you have any runs or other problems to deal with. Would leave it a few days before rubbing down final lacquer coat with 1200 wet or dry (used wet) and T-cutting to shine.
Edited to add all the stuff you get from paint shops these days seems to have 'for use by pros' notices, which I think is just to cover their backs with all the health and safety crap we have now.
