Ok been lurking around these boards for a while need some advice on first porsche ownership. We went to an opc yesterday to looking at a late 986 boxster s priced in the mid twenties. However we also need the v.occasional 2+2 use and this started us thinking on the 996 cab.

Questions...

The max age for warranty is 8 years I understand, so any car registered before 2/4/2000 can still be warrantied for a year. The 111 point check is this a good alternartive to a peter morgan/indie type inspection if this aim is to put a warranty on and also wish to see if it has any hidden horrors/general condition opinion. What kind of pre-warranty bill is this likely to throw up as a rule.

I've read all about r*s issues of more concern is the baz hartage article on the piston liner casting and the impression that they all go like that at some point. I can stand the thought of £5k bill to remanufacture the block at some point, it seems comparable to the rebuilds on the 964/993 gen. Anybody care to estimate the the failure rate on these engines, there seems to a considerable amount of reengineering effort going on a for a problem the opc sales guy claimed to have never heard off. Does the boxster suffer the same fate or is it proving immune, likewise does the intermediate half shaft issue affect the boxster.

Objectively (! on ph!) what % is a boxster s of a 996 it seems to share a fair amount of the same core engineering...80% discuss?

We are likely to buy private on either car but in general dealership finance what is deal with this "mirage" type deals they wave in front of you...i.e 10% deposits, balance payments, over 36 months, change your car after 18 months move up, get your deposit out etc etc. all seems too good to be true given you've paid £5k spread on a £25k depreciating asset, I imagine you start off in a 911 and end up in a seat ibiza (with a porsche engine) without sizeable injections of cash at each change if the payments stay the same. I've had the same patter off mercedes recently it seems to defy the laws of economics all this stuff about driving round in an £xxk motor for the same as an £x motor.

Can the basic structure of dealer finance (i.e 30k to a 12k balloon over 36 months) be replicated externally, who are the main providers?

I know the 996 cab and 986 are two v.different propositions but in summary any comments in the difference in feel between the two, my wife would be the main driver (I know I know!). Thanks, Ian
