996 tt gear linkage failure
Discussion
can anyone help please? 996 tt under extended warranty. will the gear linkage be covered under waranty? the link failed over the weekend leaving me stranded with the gear stick resembling a stick in a bucket!!!
there is cleary a manufacturing defect, has the replacement part been modified to prevent the same failure?
any help would be appreciated

iirc the original includes a plastic component. There is an aftermarket alloy one I believe. Its a well discussed topic on the rennlist forum I think.

Will be covered - Dazren on here has the alloy linkage.
Everything you need to know is detailed here in August & September 2004:

When mine broke/popped out it was covered by warranty. Although Porsche will just fit a replacement part or pop it back in. I went the alloy linkeage route and was told it would not affect the warranty. Indeed my replacement linkeage was fitted by the OPC.

Just an aside - do you seem to go through a lot of floor mats? What are you doing to them? Eating them?

Not so many recently as I now wear racing drivers ballet shoes or timberland docksides when driving the car. The heals from my brogues seemd to kill the damn mats. Interestingly I've never had this problem with other manufacturers mats.

also fella, does the alloy linkage firm up the feel of the gearleaver? i test drove an 03 tt on saturday and the geaarshift felt like a spoon in a pot of soup, and far sloppier than my 51 C2.....
The "porsche" shiftlinkeage plastic coupling that the gear stick slots into can wear over time which will allow the gearstick to pop out easier and also make the gearstick feel like it's slack. The "evoms" alloy shiftlinkeage's coupling (also plastic) is a tighter fit (per porsche technician who fitted mine) than the porsche plastic bit, so in theory it might feel tighter.

put a short shift in there and it will be more reliable and feel much better.
A short shift will give no improvement in reliability (more likely to decrease it due to the higher loads on the gearbox synchros when cold)
The problem in this instance is related to the shift cables not the shift itself (and again a short shift will put more strain on the cables when the gearbox is cold)
Fitment of the B & M short shift has voided warranty claims in the USA.
Feel is subjective (but I'd suggest anyone who is thinking of fitting one of these tries a car so equipped before going to the expense of having one fitted to their own car) the result can be a very baulky, notchy and heavy change, that is great when your hooning but a pain at all other times (especially when cold)

unfortunately the car is over 4 yrs old so not eligible for any goodwill. looks as though i lost this one.
3 strikes and the car is gone. this was strike 1.

It might be worth having a word with Porsche GB. My C2 is over 5 years old and was not bought from a franchised dealer yet they replaced the RMS when it started leaking and paid 100% of the part cost and 75% of the labour.
OK I know the RMS proplem is well known on the 996 NA (GT3 excepted) cars but surely its got to be worth more of a go

The Evoms short shift is made of significantly better materials than the OEM and is there fore more reliable despite the minor increase in load. It isn't baulky notchy or heavy as it doesn't try and shorten the shift too much. I've heard the B+M one isn't so good.
