Your ways of painting the top of the chassis outrigger tubes
Discussion
I think this applies to a number of TVR's so I will post it on the general forum. I have scraped and wire brusehed the outriggers on, using the rough side of many cable ties to clean the tops of the outrigger tubes. I am planing on POR 15 then Smoothright / Hammerite on top. I am thinking of ways to apply paint onto the tops of the outriggers, until it runs down the sides(Cerbera body is very close to the top of the tubes). Then paint all accessable areas with a brush. Has anyone else gone for this approach, and how did you do it? If not any advice on this please ?
Similar to you for scrapping I've used emery paper over the top of the outriggers in a loop and worked it backwards and forwards rather than the cable tie you are trying.
Also sad as it, is I've paint loaded a small piece of sponge tied between two pieces of string and pulled it over the tops of outriggers before now too

Hi guys, there was a thread on the cerbera forum a while back, with some great pictures of the chassis after it had been repainted. The pictures are no more, but heres the thread and some good ideas.

As you can see clear indicator lenses not finished and after seeing Pauls white gleaming outrigger corners today I decided to give myself some more work. I am lucky so far as the outriggers look very solid. Another winter job I put off.
I did read this thread earlier in the week.
You get little Peter Paint Pads about 1 inch square for painting windows - like little felt pads on a plastic handle. I heat-softened the plastic handle and bent it a bit. Then I lost it before I used it, so I don't know if it works or not - I really must get on to doing that job! Looked promising though...

Must tell me if it works, then i will have a go at the tops of mine. Will be removing the wheels over Easter to clean up the chassis. Though i must admit its in pretty good condition for a 9 year old Chim.
You must be joking..
It was seeing the front of your outriggers today gleaming in the sunlight that promped me to do mine. I am so far pleased with the condition of mine, the whole of both sides of the car seems to have been treated with black stuff probably from new, with the centre 'backbone' of the chassis still looking good in original white coating.
I used sandpaper (rough grade (green - can't recall brand but sell in B&Q) to get to the top of the outriggers, just fed over and away you go. You can't really get above the support sections though. To paint I used a small picec of sponge and wrapped some wire (strong but will bend) around it tight, dipped in the paint and away you go. With the wire it's easy to get it to go above the support sections. When it starts dripping use a brush to paint surplus over the sides and the bottom. I put a couple of coats on each side and then waxoyled too - I've got a gun and some small pipe which fits nicely above the outriggers. Took a couple of weekends to do - 1 each side. It's awkward and messy but I'm sure worth it in the end.

I was thinking of buying some Dinitrol rust treatment that comes with a tube extension that sprays 360 degrees, that way I could pass the tube along the top of the chassis rail and coat the thing in it. I cannot get down both sides of the outrigger so can't use emery cloth to go back and forth to rub the crap off. I found that using the end of a hacksaw blade and pushing up on the end of the exposed powder coating pushed the coating off the top in good chunks so I think i've shifted a lot of it. As I can't get on top of the rigger with anything else I wondered whether to 'soak' it in something like Dinitrol rust treament would work ?? Then spray directly on top with some wax like product ??
Good/bad idea ??

I used a small sponge attached to a length of lolly pop stick (hint, nail two together and then you can angle it better on the pivot), it fell off a couple of times but managed to do the job in the end. When it comes to waxoil, I can't encourage you enough to use the spray stuff, yes it goes everywhere, so be sure to have masked off the area, but with the straw from a WD40 can you can get it right in all the nooks and crannies. A crappy job finished last night hooorahh.

This is what I'm using, works well as you can paint with it too. It's just a bit of copper pipe cut lengthways and the end flattened and curved.I then stuck some velco on,the half without the loops.
Seems ok

Nice one pies; I'll be giving that a try as I've my outriggers to do whenever I'm in a sh1tty-job-mood!
