G20 GTR class win

I see the G20 rally car won its class (class A5) in the North Humberside Forest Rally yesterday. A great result and I bet it was a really fun ride through Dalby, Cropton and Langdale in N. Yorks.

Rallying is a sort of new venture for Ginettas...
(although not a first for the marque, that was achieved in the mid-80s by Paul Adams' successful car).
However, the opposition the G20 GTR had in class A5 meant it certainly wasn't out of it's depth!
A 106 Peugeot, several Ford Ka's, a Puma and a Nissan Micra.

Jus bein observant - it wasn't out of it's depth ...was it?
More important is that it finished, but how did it end up in that class?
a lightweight GRP ('modified' from the standard) car amongst a gaggle of steel bodied (no matter how lightened or modified for that matter) production car opposition.
Really...
Just to prove I am open-minded I have been conversing with a well known hack who has rallied a Ford Ka (same group) and had my eyes opened a bit and might get given a demo.
Plus just read the excellent several page feature story on the G20 GTR rally car in that new car mag on the newsagent shelves, at last giving some creedence to the man behind it.
And JG it wasn't just the 'sixties, you know, it carried on until the sell off in 89. And carries on now, just under different name.
You know what really grates us 'sixties'(lol) crowd?
Like typing G20 just a second ago - that designation was part of history.
Totally unwarranted use.

What else is there that rallies in class A5??? The list above is pretty comprehensive of the cars that regularly compete in the 1400 championship in class A5.A 106 Peugeot, several Ford Ka's, a Puma and a Nissan Micra.
Given that it has been a Micra winning the A5 class in the 1400 Championship for at least the last 5 years, and a Micra and a Puma have won the overall 1400 championship in recent years, I would say they are pretty strong opposition!
The level of competition in the 1400's is acknowledged as being one of the strongest in British Rallying - the achievement of winning it's class in only it's second finish should not be underestimated.
The weight of the Rally car is not significantly lower than other rally cars out there, due to the level of strengthening it has had to have so that it can survive in the forests - this is not a tarmac spec rally car - it is full gravel spec. The Ginetta has significantly less power that most of the other top 1400 cars - it's highly unlikely it's power to weight ratio is any better than the other cars, and probably, in the case of the top cars, is worse (given that they are running in excess of 170bhp).
The car is still in development, however is continuing to prove itself - the recent class win on the Red Dragon Rally (this covers some of the same stages as the international rally, Rally Wales)is further confirmation of this.
Well done to Ginetta for having the guts to venture into rallying in such a public way - it would have been much easier for them to choose low key and little known events to introduce themselves into rallying, but they are showing their committment to the development by doing it in the best known and best supported 1400 competition available
