So says Autocar this week...............

quote: "Fitting a roll cage to a 911 always makes it stiffer & therefore more prone to plough on understeer"

Your thoughts chaps?

Maybe, but if you are fitting a cage, chances are you will be using the car on track where standard road settings are not ideal.
Once you have the alignment set for track work, hopefully the benefits of the cage will be felt making the car stiffer enabling the suspension to work better?

Must confess, would sooner have a spring / damper unit with ARB's and geometry being involved in the handling rather than chassis flex

The chance of there being enough change in the core flexibility of the car to notice a rear cage making a handling difference is rubbish.... how much stiffer than the 996 is the 997's shell... seem to remember is was a massive amount!

Journo rubbish IMHO!!!

I think it depends on the type of cage. A simple bolt in unit is unlikely to have much effect but a multipoint weld in version will drastically stiffen the chassis. In this case, its like running a stiffer front anti roll bar - you will experience more turn in push as the mechanical grip is taken away.
However, why fit something like this if its not for the track. If you are going to the track, as has been said above, its much better to have a stiff chassis and let the springs do the work. At least you stand a chance of tuning it to your style.
Mind you, is a very steep and slippery slope at this point.....

Richard.

Good point Paul, I was just wondering if they were right or if it was journo blag!

I have driven the new 997GT3 with & without cage & in honesty the only difference I noticed is the for some bizarre reason the car with cage seemed to relay much more road noise/tyres noise (along with interior creaking!)but this may have been for different reasons!

Porsche quote "50% greater torsional rigidity" (ooh err matron!) in 964 Cup Cars with welded in Matter cage.....
