The battery on my 996 TT cab looks like it has finally died.

Having gone flat a few times if left for a few days I brought a trickle charger, as I had been using the car most days I hadn't bothered connecting it but decided on Wednesday to plug it in Thursday all OK didn't use it Thursday night but Friday battery dead flat, it's strange because its never gone flat in just one night before.

Put battery on charge yesterday but nothing dead flat and doesn't seem to want to take any charge.

Question is am I missing something , has the trickle charger murdered my battery ?.

Resigned to getting a new one do I give the OPC £250 or are there cheaper alternatives/

Thanks

What spec is the battery? I can't see any reason why you have to buy a battery from Porsche. Just get the correct battery from a manufacturer prepared to give you a 3 or 4 year guarantee. Varta and Bosch make good batteries. Check out a few web sites for prices. Try Halfords or Costco. I am sure you should be able to get a good battery for £70-£100.

For instance the site below do a suitable battery for £69.99

Second that. Had to get a new battery for my RS recently, Porsche only supply a Moll battery (German company) and a 2 year warranty...oh yeah they wanted £72 for it. I got a Bosch Silvertop from Costco, more Amphours and higher Cold cranking for £31 inc VAT drink

Lead acid batteries get killed by discharging them. After about 3 times (or 1 long slow time) they are dead.

OPC will include fitting of course, but a sub £50 silver-top will be your friend..

Just got one from OPC via Porsche Assistance, £150! So free fitting. To be fair the guy in OPC told me to do this through PA rather than bring in for a check on battery and alternator and save on any labour costs, so kudos for that.

Apparently Porsche have had a bad deal on their last two acid shipments (nothing worse than bad acid man!) so offical Porsche batteries are in short supply. Or at least the acid is.

We put an RAC battery in the boxster and that works fine and was only £65.

Mine went on the C4S last week in a similar manner. I bought the Bosch equivalent from the local Euro Car Parts centre for £66 plus vat and fitted it myself. Be warned the part number on their web site (www.eurocarparts.com)may be incorrect, you need a 412440050 if it's the same as an '03 C4S.
