just had my car in for opc warranty. did not realise just how thorough they were.? told me there was a small chip in screen and that the brake air cooling ducts were slightly scraped. now ive been told the discs must be replaced. they have VERY small hair line cracks from the drilled holes, like ive said on a previous post no where near as bad as i have seen. still the cars must need to be totally perfect to pass then?

They are taking the piss. The discs aren't even covered by the bloody warranty anyway. They are hoping you will say "ok put new discs on....."

I bet if you put new discs on, got the warranty and then took it back in 6 months when there were little (inevitable) cracks on the discs they WOULD NOT REPLACE THEM UNDER WARRANTY.

Quote from Porsche when I had discussions about cracked brake discs on my 996TT:

"discs are servicable with cracks upto 7mm long."

Surely the brake rotors are not covered by the warranty as they are a consumable - so why do they want them replaced to issue the warranty?

There is a specification for these cracks and all cross drilled rotors will have cracks to some degree or other. I believe the rules are - cracks must be less than 7mm long, cracks must not join 2 holes and cracks must not reach the perimeter of the rotor. If your cracks are within specification then I suggest you debate the issue with the OPC - they maybe just drumming up a bit of business. rolleyes

Another thread on this topic.

I had a service at the same time as the inspection, my report states:
Front brake pads worn and discs worn to safety limit.
Rear brake discs corroded and brake pads 70% worn.
Still was no problem to get the warranty put on.

Additionaly I was told that due to EU rules they couldn't give me the inspection for free as part of the service (I paid about half price for it). This is BS because the same week 2 PHers got the same major service with the inspection thrown in for free at other OPCs.

In that case aren't the OPC inadvertantly doing you a favour ?

using the dealers old favourite.. .. ..

"they all do that sir"

as in, ask anyone, OPC ALWAYS say the disks need replacing, they told me at 55k miles they needed doing, I got a second opinion and was told they are fine for now.

20k miles later (under a year) i went back to OPC for a service and got a short list of little things that needed sorting from the very same guy who said i needed the disks changing all round, and guess what, as if by magic the disks where not on the list!

I did however get them changed when the guy I used as a second opinion said to change em, which was about 30k miles after OPC originally said I would incur a messy death somtime soon if I didnt replace ALL the disks RIGHT NOW, etc.

yours could be a different case, go take it to a specialist, then make a descision from there.

I am starting to get the impression that Leeds OPC are over thorough ... or dare I say it just greedy for money.

The post someone linked to was my original post on the same topic.

I have since had a full service with Charlie at Strasse. He basically completely stripped down the brakes for me. Even took the rotors off and cleaned them down completely. We all know these brake discs are great stoppers but rust to buggery if the car is stood for more than 20 seconds. Mine now look completely new (even feel like new brakes whilst they are bedding in again). Charlie said there is no way that the rotors on the car need replacing and could last at least another 10k miles.

I am thinking we need a list on here of OPC that are a little bit more picky when it comes to giving an Inspection for the OPC Warranty.

I think I will try another OPC for another inspection in the next week (most probably closer to home in the London area) and see how I get on. I will be damned if the brakes come up again. And on that note, can anyone recommend a good OPC where someone recently got a good/fair inspection done???

hey - perhaps they should have had sight of this when doing the pre-purchase check of your PCCB's?

actually if its the sticking point of putting the warranty on your car, they tried tried this with me, I just said sure, change all the disks and brakes right now and ill pay for it all right now, but only if you warrant the brakes (and the tires, they wanted me to change the rear tires too)

15 mins of the service chappy asking what the boss throught of this and the boss came over to us and said "sorry there was a missunderstanding, we can warrant the car without the consumables being fixed"

job done.
