Never got around to posting about this car, but back in August my Dad finally took the 911 plunge and got himself a mint Arena Red Carrera 4, as seen here

Anyway, after a happy few months its tyre time, and he asked me, despite me not knowing in the slightest what the best choice to go for is.

I get the Toyo's for my Lupo GTI from mytyres, but a browse of 911 size ones on there reveals not a huge amount of choice, so does anyone have any recommendations?

Prices would be nice too, but I'm more eager to get a feel for what experienced owners recommend. Many thanks!

You'll get all sorts of recommendations on here and probably be none the wiser for it. Stick to Porsche approved N rated tyres. There is an up to date list on the PCGB forum. I recently changed to Michelin Pilot Sports after a set of Pirellis. I have no complaints about the Michelins, quiet, progressive and so far have worn well.

Assuming the car has 17inch rims then you can expect to pay about £500 for all four tyres.

A search will throw up a few debates on tyres over the years but another vote for Continental SportContact 2s. Make sure they're N rated (N2 most likely). Depending on where your Dad lives, Bracknell Tyre and Battery do them for a cracking price if it's not too far for him.

So its down to the Conti's or Michelin then. I believe the ones he had with the car are some sort of Michelin's, and he seems pretty happy with those in general. Those are 17inch cup wheels as I understand it. Thanks, I'll pass that along.

Bracknell is a bit far sadly, hes in the West Midlands and I'm no help as I always get mine online. Am I right in thinking its wise to get a Porsche specialist to deal with fitting and balancing, rather than just going to quick fit?

Hi I'm in the West Midlands also. The cheapest place for Michelins is Costco. If you don't fancy a drive to Star City then try all the standard tyre places even smaller locals as most will price match.

When you're having them changed get the Manager/ fitter at the tyre place to inspect all of the wheel rims with you and note any damage. Stay with them while they change the tyres. Remember to stipulate the N rated tyres when ordering.

Yet another vote for Continental SportContact 2 N2's - i've done 85k miles in 993's on lots and lots of tyres and this is what i'm using...

Contis are a hell of a lot quieter than Pirellis which is an improvement when you are looking at driving back from Cornwall at ten at night, already knackered.

:checknameofforum: Yes, this is Pistonheads.

:doubtsanity: Cannot believe that tyre recommendtions are based on noise levels and wear rate.

:mythoughts: Buy an uber-grippy dry weather tyre and drive slower in the wet - and turn up the stereo.

Or get the best of everything by buying the Michelins

Admittedly a little more $$$ though, but as PP says Costco do some great deals.

Some of use our cars all year round for every journey we make and noise can be an an issue, as can traction in snow (there isn't much). I had Pirellis on which were quite grippy tyres - maybe not the best - but they were noisy as f**k on most surfaces and that gets wearing after eight or ten hours behind the wheel.
