Steering bearing

On the last MOT I recieved an advisory on the steering rack bulkhead bearing having play in it. I got one from TVRcarparts and stripped out the old one expecting to find some knackered plastic bushes; to my suprise a bearing had already been fitted. I fitted the new one and all is fine, but the play the MOT tester found was not in the bearing but the pinch bolt that clamps onto the triangular part of the steering rack was loose MOT testers pah, got any funny MOT tales to tell?

Last MoT the V8S had was done in about 20 minutes. Chap asked me to hang around as the computer only allows him to print a cert every 45 minutes or so, so ended up with a free cuppa and a chat about odds and ends. Guy asked me if I'd prefer to wait or have the cert posted on to me and ignored a blown sidelight and number plate light on the grounds that I looked like the sort of chap that would probably fix it before long. I was expecting the emissions to be tested on the Mondeo I was parked next to, but oddly enough the old girl sailed through without any help. Top chap Checked all the important bits, but didn't worry about details too much. Won't be in business too long if he gets mystery shopped by the DfT though..

'Ere Simon, your MOT tester isn't Big John is it? The guy I use (of that moniker) has an amazingly similar attitude to Wedges/ Esprits/ almost anything you take in if he likes the look of you (and a fiver for beer often helps )...

When I went to MOT my S I was poo-pooing my pants. He checked the wheels bearings, Rack, Brakes, Lights, Horn, washer & wipers and that was it! It took around 10mins, at the end he said "not much to these cars" I asked what the CO2 figure was like, he replied "I'm not testing it, you got more leaks in that exhaust pipe than the space shuttle has" Fan-bl**dy-tastic, down side I had to wait around until the 45mins was up. I can't wait until nexts years MOT...........

My V8S failed its MOT on excessive free play in steering top universal joint, registration lamp not working and excessive C02 emissions. Have ordered replacement UJ from TVR Carparts today. There seems to be quite different attitudes in the MOT fraternity!
