Hi everyone,

I'm interested in buying a porsche which will be used only for weekends and occasional evening use (going to the gym etc).

I've owned BMW's for the last 5-6 years in diffeent variants, e30 m3, e36 328i sport, e28 m5 etc, however I fancy a change so I'm considering a 964 911 or a 968 in any of the variants.

I've got about £15k to spend, however I'm really looking for some guidance in all areas. Are 964's that expensive to upkeep? - are there any nasty gremlins with the 968's?

Does anyone have any garage recommendations who stock such cars? 911virgin looks interesting - feedback anyone?

thanks in advance.

Andrew

Old 911. How old depends on how much time you want to spend in the garage. 964's are more expensive to service than 993s and 996s, as they have the whole valve adjustment thing to do.

I see a trend...

Yeah I sort of knew that would be the answer, but I'm keen to hear some positives of a 968?? - Can't seem to get them out of my head.

Ideally you'd have both, and the 968 is lovely - a brilliant car, and one I've a soft spot for myself. But if you can only have one, you sort of know you'll get a cracking 968, and the 911 itch will remain there to be scratched. Drive them both and see what you think. 911virgin seems to be a decent enough place to go - mostly good feedback here I think, though I wouldn't rule out looking and buying privately with 15k to spend.

Well I am a 964 owner so maybe I am biased.

But from what you have said; occasional use, previous bmw owner, want it to drive to the gym in etc. I would say 968 suits you better, stilla quick nice handling car, but more practical and less extreme for a first time Porsche owner.

Very different cars. 968 feels like a 'normal car' - a very good one, but normal.

964 will feel odd when you get in it and it will stil feel diferent 3 years later.

I had them both and loved them. I drove the 968 faster and with enormous confidence but my heart is lost to 911s I'm afraid. To me they are special in away 944 / 968 can never be. That's not to put them down I still love them and keep a 944 turbo as well, mainly for the track

You need to drive both - a lot

964 C2 Coupe, get it inspected by an expert before buying.

Budget £1500 pa for maintenance.

Depends what you are looking for. I chose a 968 as I wanted what I believe to be [ducksandrunsforcover] the better handling car [/ducksandrunsforcover]. However, if I was looking for a "911", I wouldn't have gone for a 968.

I genuinely believe that the 968 is one of the best handling cars of all time. Weight distribution is very good, the engine has adequate power, and the whole package is first class.

Pop along to www.porsche968uk.co.uk/phpbb/index.php for more info.

As Loach said tho, if you've already had old skool M3s and M5s, it tends to be more of the same..

Thanks very much guys and girls.

I think I'll go and drive a few different examples and start to make some choices from there.

911's do definately appeal, however as stated I really would like a nice 968 Club sport - there is something about them.

I'll be lurking around this forum from now on, so I guess the research starts here.

Off topic - I'm off to le mans this year - is anyone with a 968 or 964 911 going that would like to let me have a look over their car - maybe even a passenger ride?

Thanks again

Andrew

968

15k will get you a cracking, virtually bombproof car that handles like a dream, has no real reliability issues (provided cams have been reglarly serviced and brake calipers inspected), and you will still have PLENTY of change.

15K may or may not get you a good 911. But you will certainly be taking more of a punt and you may well get stung for some monumental bills. Furthermore you wont have had much change from your initial budget. Whilst a 911 is undoubtedly a car to aspire to, a 968 is a better choice of FIRST porsche. IMHO

Andrew, if you are interested in a 964 you may want to haunt the Rennlist forums, some of us meet at the Worcester park pub every so often, the dates are normally on the 964 Rennlist pages.
