Anyone out there used this spray thats supposed to when sprayed on your number plate over expose the flash from a speed camera in all condition leaving a blank plate. It would be great if it true, I can take these fake plate off!

I recall reading recently that the fine for having no plate at all was about £20 - £30 - can anyone confirm this please?!

Easier than faffing with sprays that may get you a much bigger fine!!

indeed
£30 if you cant talk your way out of it at roadside

'Yes of course officer my documents are all to hand just here'

if you get a producer, its most likely a fine as well,
and part MOT inspection to prove plate is re-fitted

why is this thread duplicated BTW

I remember attending some training on speed cameras from our local traffic police some time ago. The question of dirty and unreadable plates was raised then. We were told (and shown) that if the image is difficult to read, the police can, and do, use techniques such as reversing the image and software enhancement to render it readable. Apparently, they also buy as many types of these number plate sprays as they can find and test them. At that time (about 8 years ago) they had not found a single one that worked. Whether that's still true now that most cameras are digital and the whole process much more automatic, I don't know.

Steve Warren has also tested these sprays and concludes that they don't work www.ukspeedtraps.co.uk/platespray.htm

i asked a police friend of mine about this kind of spray and he did mention that worse case if the police found out that you have put the spray on (don't know how they would be bothered to check) you "could" be also charged with trying to obstruct the law??

by business partner bought a can a few years back from a stall at brands hatch but never bothered using it to my knowledge.

IIRC
its applied one layer at a time untill you judge its opacity
sufficent to be unreadable,

clearly as the local chave have demonstarted its not only unreadable by machine
but by the casual observer in much the same way
taking a can of black spray paint would be,

and a dead giveaway frankly.

On the plus side it limits your chances of alerting plod to your
cyrilic text style by rendering the entire plate black

Sounds like a much better and cheaper scheme would be to fill a spray gun with filtered mud and give the whole front and back the subtle 'grime' treatment.

Or just take the plate off if simply screwed on..

I have something similar made by Plasti-Kote that I broght over with me from the states. Works great, it's a clearcoat spray that reflects light. Makes license plates completely unreadable to cameras from what I can tell in my tests here home. The problem, as I found out when I put it on the car, is that it reflects ALL light. Including headlights. It's very obvious that something has been done to the plate because the plate shines like a light itself.

But, I've seen lots of plates which are shiney when new so I don't think yours will really stand out as having been treated

I bought some after reading a Sunday Times article a few years ago. DOT were trying to ban it at the same time as claiming it didnt work. Why try to ban it if it doesn't work? Anyway it got a review suggesting "celebrties" may benefit from using this to ensure the number plates on their cars wouldnt be visible if "papped" If you take a photo using a regular digital camera, the image is still readable-the flash on a regular camera is no where near as powerful on a roadside Gatso. The more powerful flash causes the numberplate sprayed with this stuff to over expose.

I think it works.

If you can make the numberplate yourself it should be easy (assuming a gatso flash - which you can roadangel - useless for other cameras) just to use translucent grey instead of black for the numerics.

However the age of the big flashgun is dying anyway, so the entire anti-flash exercise is futile anyway.
