new boots for cayman
Discussion
hi folks.
new to forum so be gentle.
ive got a cayman 2.7 and im into doing track days.
i now need to get some new tyres on the front, but dont know whats best to fit.
continental on the car at the moment , as fitted from the factory.
toyo or michelin cups seem to be popular, and the wheels are 18" boxster s .
so do i :
1. fit a new pair of contis and carry on doing track days / wait for the rears to wear out as well.
2. fit toyo or michelin cups all round.
its taken 1600 miles / 5 track days to wear out tyres and brakes.
best advise please !
cheers

What circuits are you driving on? Wearing the fronts out before the rears is fairly unusual. In my experience, the Boxster is quite light on its fronts and the wear ratio is usually 1:2 ( ie. change the rears then change all 4, and repeat.)
It's a 2.7 so there is relatively little stress to the rear tyres methinks. Compensating limited power at the exit with getting in faster into corners could explain it though

There speaks an 997S owner!
Seriously though, track days are all about fun - not absolute times. Especially if you drive a Cayman 2.7 (or a Boxster 2.7 as I do.)
If you are suffering from excessive understeer then you might consider changing your driving style (and checking your tyre pressures) as this is not compulsory!
It's always worth having your alignment checked out too as there are plenty of stories about new cars being delivered with all four corners pointing in different directions.
However, I accept that some airfield circuits have highly abrasive concrete surfaces and it's easy to rub the shoulders off your outside front tire even if you have a relatively clean style.
Toyo R888s and Pilot Sport Cups are great tyres but unless you have the suspension set up to match, you may not get all the benefits.
Regular 'N-rated' Michelin Pilot Sports are very good all round tyres and many people find that they are better overall than the Conti's.
Have fun!

thanks for the advise,
and a reply to a couple of points.
the front tyre presures are 32, but ive raised them to 36 (cold).
the rear tyres are also worn, but are still showing some tread on the outer tyre where the fronts now have none.
ive done a mixture of circuit and airfield days including the porsche day at brands.
i do drive the car very hard , and i know i do brake very late and perhaps into the corner sometimes on trail braking.
it is also very hard to break traction at the rear / oversteer the cayman.
ive really have tried to get the thing sideways , but in the dry it drifts a bit and thats about it !
it now understeers quite badly, which i think is down to the worn tyres.
new pair of contis on the front for now ?
what do you think.

If I were you I would fit new Pilot Sports on the front and go to your next track day with the original Conti rears and run them into the ground. Then buy some new Pilot Sports for the rear.
You will have much more fun when you have more grip at the front and less at the back - although make sure that you are withing the law and drive safely on the public roads!
A friend of mine who runs a 993RS occasionally buys salvage tyres in 225 width and runs them on the narrow rims with spacers on the rear axle. This gives him a cheap solution for some serious tail out action - just for fun. Then he puts his Pilot Sport Cups back on and disapears into the distance.
In the US, some Boxster people fit 225's on the front axle instead the regular 205's to keep understeer in check. You need to check the aspect ratio though to keep the rolling circumference within limits but this is not such a big deal as changing the size of the rear tyres.
Good luck.
