3.2 starting problem..........
Discussion
Morning all. I have a problem..........with my car, and need to pick your brains chaps, for some possible causes.
My 3.2 carrera is refusing to start. It's never missed a beat in the 2 years of ownership so going to turn the key Monday evening resulted in engine turning over but no fire in the hole. The fuel pump is working ok, just no spark at the leads. I've changed the DME relay and fitted a new Rotar Arm, checked fuses and their connections but no change. It's been suggested that changing the crankshaft sensor is the next thing to address or is it 'could be any one of many things?'
Any ideas?

3.2 starting problems are well known and are covered in detail on the Pelican Parts technical site here:

I had a 3,2 with a similar problem.
We had a tester (spark plug!) to sdee if there was any juice coming out of the HT leads first of all. That turned out to be okay, so we went and disconnected the three connections on the left hand side of the engine bay (They're in a row next to each other) that control the engine temp, and a couple of other things (crankshaft sensor might be one of them.) It actually turned out to be a bit of crap in the plug, so blew on all three connections (take a big breath) and then made sure that they were perfectly tight when they were re-connected and it fired up first time - perfect. Not saying that it IS this, but it's a 3 minute check that you can do and it's free. Everyone always says its the DME and it most often isn't! Let me know how you get on. Good luck!

How frustrating is a non starting Porsche ?
The spark generated on turn over and running is sensed by two different sensors on the flywheel.Top one [B] senses on turn over. bottom one when its running. If it push starts or bumps but doesn't start via key indicates it could be the start sensor, if it fires up but doesn't run indicates the bottom [D] one.
A common problem also, is the failure of the electrical plug on the ignition switch, it isn't connecting properly, so don't overlook that, the contacts wear out.
My guess [if you've looked at the reference sensors on the flywheel, coil distributor and ign switch] is ECU under the passenger seat. A dry joint within this would cause this problem.
Good luck Fella

Good news, all sorted!
Turns out it was a crankshaft sensor that had failed so both have been replaced and pick her back up today.
Thanks for your suggestions guys.
