Hey guys,

I have ordered the optional motorsport front cage for my RS but after seeing pics I am not so sure I want it installed (looks like it's easy to hit head etc...). I think I have decided to try having the front cage in the car for a while, but if I decide to take it out do I need to book a time with Porsche and have them do it or is it easy enough for me to take care of?
Thanks!

The front cage section (on the assumption it's the same as on the 996) just bolts in and out and is a not too difficult but akward job. It will result in some fairly large holes in your carpet and mats. I think it adds character but some would probably think it looks downright tinky. Add the big holes for the fire extinguisher and you're well on your way to a string vest of a carpet.

However, its pretty unsafe for road use as it's right at yer head and you really should wear a helmet with the front section in - not ideal for most road trips and likely to get people in tescos pointing and laughing.

I too have ordered the front cage for my RS which arrives in a minute.

I have been debating whether to have the dealer fit it before delivery. The holes in the carpet are effectively there already you just need to pop the carpet out of the pre-cuts, the same with the extiquisher.

I notice that the pick-ups on the rear cage where the front section would locate is quite high and I would have thought it would be out of the way of head hieght as you tend to sit quite low in the seat.

I would be interested to see pics, can you supply link or similar.

If you have a road accident and don't have harnesses on, you will bounce around a lot and would quite easily seriously injure yourself on the cage. Thats why most insurers will not cover roadcars fitted with front cages. Since it's not a factory fitted item it could even void your insurance if you claimed for injury as a result of hitting it.

I removed the front cage from my GT2, as my head was so close and I felt that the rear cage added all the rollover protection I wanted in addition to the already strong shell.

For race cars it's obviously a different story, as they're only ever driven with helmets and harnesses.
