Alloy Rocker Covers

Recently got hold of a pair of alloy rocker covers for the 2.8/2.9 cologne engine at a reasonable price. (i.e. not the ones that went on ebay for over £200!!)

I tried fitting them on my S2. The right hand cover fits a treat, however the left hand cover won't fit under the alternator bracket. The alloy covers appear to be around 15mm taller than the original steel ones.

Any one else ever fitted alloy rocker covers? If you did what did you do? "modify" the alternator bracket or "modify" the rocker cover?

Hmmm... sounds familiar, I noticed a "ding" on my offside steel rocker box when cleaning it for painting and foolishly knocked the ding out, only to have to knock it back in again when it fouled the alternator... Duh!

Had the same experience with my S3C. I used the angle grinder on the alternator-bracket - making sure to make a smooth finish in the removed area. No problems :-)

My rocker box cover had gotta dent in it right under the alternator. The alternator had flattened what appeared to be an unused pipe clamp which was tack welded to the top of rocker box cover. This in turn had caused its weld to fracture and give the cover a liberal coating of oil.

Now Tvrgit suggested I employed the services of a small mammal to hold its paw over the hole to prevent oil egress. Well, with all respect to Tvrgit, I thought that was a tw..at of an idea and so I brazed up the hole and bought a longer fan belt...went from a 1175c to a 1200c size belt....that lifted to alternator some way off the rocker box cover.

To fit slightly larger alloy covers you might apply some heat to the alt. mounting bracket and bend it outwards a tad... that might work....
