Where to buy a 3.2 or 964 ?
Discussion
First off I know nothing much about the details surrounding the costs of running either of these cars. The only Porsche I've ever driven was my dad's 914, many years ago.
I've been running my daily driver Seat LC for 5 years. I currently do about 40k+ a year in it and have been looking to replace it. Then it occurred to me, as nowt has ever gone wrong with it why not spend the cash on a weekend car instead
My budget is 20k MAX, and the only 911 shape I have ever liked is the 964 Targa or 3.2 Targa.
I see that there are various threads around the pro's and con's of these two vehicles, but my questions are slightly different :
* Where would you recommend I buy from ? ( specialist dealers .. not private )
* Assuming that the car does 7k PA what would the approx annual running costs be ( assuming no major failures )
* What year car should I be looking for ?
* Insurance. I would be starting afresh with this car so who would you recommend ?
Yup, I know a lot of questions, but answers gratefully received

Not sure where you live, but if you're in the SE/ Kent then this may help. I bought a 3.2 and later a 964 Turbo II - both from Paul Devyea (www.pauldevyea.co.uk). Never had any problems with either car, had them both serviced with him as well. Both were used daily, and did about 6k a year plus a European trip each year - basically flat out in France, and then driven pretty hard through Alps etc.. I'd go back to him any day. I also bought a 993 from Camtune - had that about 18 months, and again, no problems at all. Would use them again as well. Good luck.
I'm sure there'll be lots of opinions along shortly, but here's a few "off the top of me head" comparisons:
3.2
pre-87 = 915 gearbox, needs to treated with care but good ones are fine
post-87 = G50 gearbox, much nicer to use and greater longevity, but greater power losses
no power steering - better feel/more involving/harder to live with everyday
964
pre-93 cars suffer oil leaks, so check carefully when buying as re-builds are expensive
usually need dual mass flywheel doing at same time if clutch is worn, so dearer job
has power steering - easier to use/live with
more powerful
Bigger brakes and ABS too
There will be good and bad cars privately and at dealers, satisfy yourself as to the condition of whatever you find that takes your fancy. More likely you'll want/need an inspection on a private purchase.
