Quick question for you all.

I have a 2002 911 C2 996 with about 60,000 miles on it. I have recently found out I will be doing more miles with work (could be 30,000+ per year).

My question is this:

Should I swap it our for a low mileage motorway muncher or just pile the miles on?

I guess I am worried that it will be worth about £3.00 in a year or 2 so should I part ex it whilst I am in the possition of not losing too much?

I have started a thread in the general section looking for suggestions of what car I should look at but I guess I need some more specific advice on this car.

Bottom line is I dont really want to get rid of it as I love it and anythiong else seems like a massive step backwards!

Any advice would be usefull!

Cheers!

Would your budget allow you to keep the 911, and buy a cheap Golf/Passat/Skoda/Seat TDi?

Keep the Porsche and buy either a 99-01 BMW 320d (45mpg) or a 01 onwards A4 1.9tdi (50+mpg). 4-5k should find you a leggy example of the beemer. Whilst 4800-5500 should find you slightly less leggy (but not much) A4.

Both offer more comfort, room and prestige than golf etc.

The purchase price of the 320 or A4 will be offset by lower depreciation, lower fuel and running costs of your P&J.
Plus the added bonus of keeping the 'special' feel every time you start the Porsche.

If you have to sell the Porsche, buy a Phaeton tdi and 'waft' to work.

LOL probably the wrong place to ask this question!!

I totally agree with everyhting said here though and it may be an option to buy a cheap second car.

The only thing is I am not sure I like the idea of having £35K tied up in a car that is sat on my drive most of the time. Also that I want my expensive car to be the one I drive most of the time!!

Worries me that because I do so much driving during the week I may not want to go near a car at the weekend.

The week / weekend split does all too often mean you don't drive the good car as much as you want. However I alweays have as cheap barge going at the same time as the 911 and try to use them 50/50. So this week for exaple onday beutifu lday get the smoke the littel car in. This morning got calls to make smoke the barge about.

If I have a big boring trip to make ins traffic its the jag if the roads are good its the Porsche. Last year I did 6k in the Porsche 7k in the big car. You can get lots of margins under 2k and you'll more than save this in servicing costs and not racking up excess miles on boring trips.

Sit down and do the sums.

In most cases, the extra costs of the second car will be higher than the ADDITIONAL costs on your P&J (including higher depreciation due to big miles).

i used mine as a rep mobile for 18 months, did 42k miles in it, most of it for work.

every meeting I turned up at i was:-

A, never late
B, felt good when I arrive, even though every week id have a 4 hour trip to a customer and then drive back that same day.
C, getting 33mpg if I tried.
D, having fun enjoying getting paid to drive my 911.

I think the main point for using the 996 was becuase on the long 4 hour trip I was arriving tired and achining a little in the landrover, the porsche was a totally different story though, never ahced or felt tired, one time I even got back after the mamoth 4 hour to, 4 hour back drive to only get home, get changed and go back out for a blast again (at 10'oclock at night )

The sums do add up if you want them to and are prapred to run a My first smoke was a rover 820 - bought £900. 13000 miles covered in 2 years.
Maintaince: One oil change and one leaky petrol breather thingy - £100
Tyres 75
Insurance 220 a year.
Tax 150 ish
Car sold 700
Total cost about £1000 or 500 a year.

It definately saved more than that on the Porsche.
