What a job,i swear the price of paint goes up about this time every year.And since when did hammerite change to being able to paint directly on to bare matal.I spent ages painting the primer on,only to ind the new tins can be painted straight on

Only done one outrigger and im plastered in paint and grime

Just finished repainting my front suspension, I know exactly what you mean. Outriggers and rear suspension arms next!

I thought Hammerite was always suitable for bare metal?

I've always used a primer,my car has two coats of primer and two coats of the red stuff

Did i say outrigger I meant trailing arm

Should be OTR next month,just got the brakes to change,finish painting,get a seat belt mount repaired,MOT and re carpet the boot as a battery fell over and spilt its contents

Oi and less of the old,its this house ownership thats slowing me down,well thats my excuse

Primer??? All I know is that there is a NON-FERRO primer...but that is only used on aluminum etc. IMHO Hammerite is suitable for straight on the bare metal.

You can get phosphoric acid based etch primer for steel, not much use on the S, unless you have removed most of the rust / chassis already. Some paints recommend a tie primer / sealer, usually if they are epoxy based. IMO the best thing to do is remove the grease using some sign writers prep and use the paint as is.

You lot had me confussed so I got the tin its called Hammerite anti rust primer.I did the engine bay with it 3 years ago it still ok

Yes Z we are wasting our time the best stuff to use it waxoyl underbody protection.It doesn't look as good but nothing shifts it and because it never seems to fully dry it wont chip

Ive used Hammerite Smooth (2 or 3 coats)over Kurust after scraping away what I could wire brushing and white spiriting off the old waxoyl and agree its bloody messy. I suppose my hands will never go rusty... whats left of them.
I sometimes wish I had used Black instead of red though...
I am covering the finished paint job with a combination of Waxoyl (underneath) and ACF50 where the chassis can be seen (with the bonnet up obviously) as it seems to be highly thought of by the motorbike lads... it had better be good as its bloody expensive as well. I'm hoping I will not need to do more than touch up in places in future after this effort...

Well im still cleaning/painting,the underbody sealant i put on two years ago refuses to come of,its a case if scrape it paint some jizer/gunk/thinners on brush in the put the pressure washer on a full power.The good bit is so far the rear end is solid hew:

Mind ive only uncovered the nearside rear

That 'krust' stuff is effectively the active ingredient in Hammerite and Waxoil as far as I can make out.
I painted the lower wishbones of my old S in it after scrapping and rubbing them back, it turns it all a hard black (carbonised). Funny enough I never did get around to putting the Hammerite over it 18months later when I sold it and tbh they were not much different from the day I painted them, very impressed with the stuff
