Gents, can anyone help with this.
Over the last 2 weeks, it has taken a couple attempts to start the car. This is unusual as it normally only need to turn over once before fireing.
But today, after fitting a new exhaust system it struggled to start again. Then 20 mins later I came to start it again and it won't catch. It doesn't even try. The engine turn, but does not fire. The battery is good, but with all my pumping of the throttle, I cannot smell petrol.
Any ideas ? Where's the fuel filter ? Anyone want to come and fix it for me ( only kidding) but any advise/what to try next would be appreciated.

Cheers
Andy

Can you here the fuel pump kick in, if not check the fuses on the bulkhead. one of them is for the fuel pump. The pump and filter are situated behind the arch on the passenger side rear.

Yes, I can hear the fuel pump kick in.
I have a new pump to fit anyway, so I'll check the filter then.

Has anybody else suffered with fuel starvation ?
Or should I be looking more at the electrics ?

Are the plugs wet with fuel?

If you have flooded it, then you can try drying out three plugs on one side which are easy to get at. If you struggle again, try drying it out by cranking with your foot in the floor. The system has an anti-flood strategy where if the throttle more than 3/4 at cranking it stops injecting.

Sounds like you need to pop round to have it checked/put the latest map in.

Thanks for the advise. I have a GTO3, Do I have a programmable ECU then ? And when you say 'pop around', where is 'around'
I will get the plugs out and check for spark and fuel.

OK that didn't take long. I have checked the plugs and am getting a spark, but no smell of fuel in the cylinders at all.
Could I have a blockage ? I have a quarter of a tank of fuel. Has anybody else had problems with fuel starvation ?

Andy,

We're in Brentwood, Essex. Don't know if that helps.

If you're not getting fuel into the cylinders, but you have got spark, then the ECU is working OK to give you spark, so the fault is somewhere else.

Are you 100% positive you have the fuel pump running when you switch the ignition on?

Do you have pressure in the fuel rail (check the Schrader Valve on the fuel rail under the throttle body - should have a black plastic cap on it)?

I have disconnected the fuel rail and switched on the ignition, but no fuel comes out. The fuel pump definately runs. So what does this schrader valve do ? I will go and have a look anyway.

OK
I have taken off what I think is the schrader valve (small tap with black cap under the throttle linkages) on main fuel rail and started the ignition. The fuel pump runs, but I only get a pityful dribble.
This to me, points to no fuel or shagged pump or blocked filter. Can someone agree or have I missed something.
I have a new pump to fit, so I'll check the filter then.
Anyone had similar problems ?

Hi Andy,

The fuel pipes are quite big from the tank, take off the cover in front N/S/R wheel and you'll see the pump and filter. The filter is just a paper type inside the canister. See if you have fuel at the filter, be careful though as it will leak heavily, I cable tied mine up higher than the tank level to stop me wearing it all.

Um, is there any petrol in the tank spin

OK Gents. I still need your help.
I have fitted my new pump and it works fine. When I undo the schrader valve, I get a spray of fuel, so I know it has got as far as the fuel rail, but it still won't start.
It turns over well and I am getting a spark. But when I remove a plug it is dry with no smell of fuel.
So, Is there anything else in line to the injectors ? Inline filter maybe or solenoid etc. What about a second high pressure pump (clutching at straws here)
What would be the process to find my fault ?

Many thanks

That suggests the injectors are failing to fire.

Any chance of getting a scope or fast updating multimeter on the injector signal to see if it's firing? Or, if they're anything like jenvey injectors, you could pop one out and see if it's happy to spray fuel everywhere (whilst taking care not to incinerate yourself...).

Could also be a duff throttle pot - if it's thinks you've got your foot down, the ecu might hold off the fuelling on the assumption that you're trying to clear a flooded engine...

The throttle pot sounds more likely as It is not likely to be all the injectors unless the ecu is preventing them doing their job. Is there an easy way to test the throttle pot ?
If not, I am assuming that it is a ford standard pot.
Also, if I change the pot, will I have to have it reset ?

Slim chance it could be a burnt out injector driver in the ecu I suppose...

Connecting a laptop to the ecu loom would be easiest, if you have access to the MBE cable & s/w (er, and an MBE ecu...). Or a multimeter on the pot if you can get to it - I guess you'd be looking for the voltage on one side varying across the full range of pedal movement.

A new pot would almost certainly have to be carefully fettled to match what the ecu is expecting to see at the extremes of input.

Noid light plugged into the injector loom will tell you straight away if the injectors are being fired.

When Trevor replaced mine it was just a simple start up process.

Having had a dodgy throttle pot, it didn't stop it starting, just massivly lumpy on idle.

Still no joy.
Having spoken to Noble, they have told me that I will need about 2.5bar at the fuel rail. I am not getting anything like that. I will check the fuel lines and filter, but how does the regulator work ? I can hear fuel returning to the fuel tank, is this correct ?

The regulator sends the 'excess' pressure from the pump back into the fuel tank to maintain a constant pressure to the fuel rail.
Sounds like your regulator is faulty if you have pressure from the pump and you can hear it flowing into the tank and not maintaining a minimum pressure.

OK, I've done more investigating. Contrary to previous posts, I now have a good flow of fuel at the rail. When I take off the schrader valve and run the pump, I get 2 foot of fuel.
But still won't play ball.
Is there an air bleed at the end of the rail ? What stops trapped air ?
I have a spark and fuel at the rail, so the injectors are not pulsing.
I will speak to Noble tomorrow, but apart from the throttle pot, is there anything else that may prevent the injectors doing their job ?
Getting worried that I may have a shagged ECU now.

What about the imobiliser ? Would that prevent the injectors doing their job if not reset properly ? (clutching at straws)
