Discussion
Hi, I have been thinking for a while now of getting a 944 or 928 either to replace or in addition to my 964. Quite possibly to replace it to be honest as I am trying to concentrate on my business and getting geared up for racing next season.
I need one because I need to tow a trailer more and more, I have tried the ordinary car thing, don't like 4x4's and basically want to get back to a fun car with towbar, as I cannot find a 964 towbar for love nor money.
Before we go any further I'd like to say this thread is about the cars not my proposed usage of them.
Today I took an a reg 928 S2 out for test drive, it was guards red with black leather, reasonable body wise, £5k from a dealer, negotiable as it would be a trade buy anyway.
There were a couple of concerns on the car, not least the fact the aircon had been removed to fit a bigger radiator (there was still room and why is a bigger radiator fitted?? Overheating??)
But my biggest problem was the performance. Or lack of? I expected it to feel big, I quite like big cars, but not so remote, steering was very light, brakes were not great, and while it was capable of propelling itself along it hardly hurtled down the road like the 964, you hit the pedal and the car moved but not quickly it felt like a jag not a porsche, and even if you mashed it to the floor it dropped down a cog but didn't have the surge of power I would expect from a big engine.
So my question is does this sound about right or a bad example? I found the car very comfortable, and love the look of them, it would be a good tow car but i want fun when the trailer isn't hooked up.

Sound like you drove a poor example. While not supercar fast these days, all 928s ought to feel entertainingly brisk.
Drive some more. The good ones are great.

He's from your neck of the woods & will point you in the right direction , he's only got 6 1/2 928's
. Edit to add , if its a S2 your after, get a '86 , they come with the S4 BIG Brembo brakes all round.

Hi
I have an 86 S2 and there was something wrong with the one you drove....assuming it was an auto like mine....floor the pedal (which activates the kickdown switch) and it should take off with HUGE grunt and speed...
Air con is often removed as it rarely works on 20 year old 928s without 1K to 2k worth of work.....so lots remove it for weight saving...
Ummm...I dont think there IS a larger rad by the way...I am the PCGB 928 moderator and I have never heard of ANY non 928 rad fitting as it has the oil cooler in the rads for the tranny as well....that sounds like dealer "talk" lol..
Never towed with mine but it should be fine as all 928s have huge amounts of torque...
Any more questions just ask here or on the PCGB 928 FORUM...
All the best Brett
p.s. my 928 will outperform ANY 964 (without my Nitrous)

I agree, I have an S4 manual, and it's frighteningly fast over 4000 revs, and it builds up very nicely below that.
I had my aircon refilled last year, and it works fine. I also have no problems with the car overheating, don't know why someone would fit a bigger radiator.
The only thing I'd agree to is that the steering can be a bit vague in the straightahead, but it weights up nicely in turns. The servo assistance is speed dependent, too.

cheers for the advice I'll email the chap you mentioned when i get chance, and brett the topic was never intended to be a willy waving competition i'm sure your 928 is very quick.
Hi
Lol....I think that part of my post came out wrong .....apologies...
What I was trying to say was there MUST have been something wrong with the car you test drove as it seemed lacking in power to you....and as you can compare to a 964....I was TRYING to say, it should have felt at LEAST as powerful as a 964 if not more so...
Apologies again
All the best Brett
