The great Tip debate.
Discussion
I'm yet to find a local dealer with a Tip 911 or Boxster for me to try, but even when I do, I doubt it will be enough time for me to fully understand it, so I'm wondering what owners' opinion is? I've read that wear & tear is roughly the same for manual/Tip?
I tried an SMG M3 last year (looked to 'normal' for me) and found it a bit weird to be honest (having never even driven an auto), but a mate has since bought one and says he'd never go back now he's adjusted to it. I understand that Tip isn't the same as DSG/SMG is it? At risk of sounding dumb, is it simply an auto with a manual overide on the wheel?
And no 'Tip's for girls' advice please

tip is just an auto slush box with manual override on the steering wheel.
i've driven my mums 996c2tip and hate the box - its a squalid piece of engineering which should never, ever, have been stuck in a 911 but it is relaxing to drive sedately or in congestion or asleep, like any auto...

Tip is an auto gearbox with a manual override (Eg I read somewhere that 996TT tip was tha same gearbox as used on the SL55).
SMG on BMW, is a manual box with an automatic clutch with gear changes being done either by flicking the gear lever up or down or using the paddles behind the steering wheel.

I am 28 years young and i did own a Boxster Tiptronic for 3 and half years only being a 2.7 the tip gear box suited the car fantasticly no problems and to be honest i did used to hammer the car !! i wanted more power so i bought a Tuscan ! the arguement about the difference in boxes has nothing to do with power or speed it is about what you want from the car as an individual !

dont listen to them try one i did and loved it, not to sure about boxster tip, 996 has enugh power to get away with it.
95% of the time it will be your normal car the other 5 it is down to driver ability nt the gearbox as to how fast you go.
remember for the off the line full speed you have to kick it down to 1st
