With 996TTs now hitting the £40k mark, would it be complete folly to buy one of these bottom of the market cars? I mean, am I looking for trouble or has depreciation really hit the TT this hard? Is it a bargain?

I know it really depends on the car and it needs to be properly checked out, for which I would employ the 111 point OPC check. But what is the general consensus on here?

HPI check. Suss the owner out. 111 pointer and OPC warranty and you can not go wrong. Expensive to run though....

But who cares

not expensive to run in my experience of running one for 18 months/21k miles - (tyres and brakes aside that is)

unbelievable value for money if you want one of the best fast road cars in the world if you ask me.

Personally i'm still not convinced i like the looks of the 997TT more than the 996TT - and when you consider you're getting as near as damnit the same amount of usable performance for 60k less it's a steal!

From what I have read on here it does seem to be the consensus that they are not really much more to run than say a 4S (which would be my obvious other option).

I guess it would go through tyres with that sort of power going down to the road. Brakes again sure due to the weight. These are acceptable.

I like the fact there are no RMS issue, but what about something like a cracked block, cylinder linings or intermediate shaft failure? Does the TT engine suffer from these?

Is servicing really no more expensive? Do they tend to eat clutches like a Lambo and does the general principle of a heavy clutch point to a clutch on its way out?

The engine is not based on the 996 engine but the previous series. This is why the new 996 issues of RMS, linings, heads and inter shaft are not issues with the TT or the GT3. Other things may still go wrong though so an OPC warranty is a cheap insurance for that.

A heavy clutch can be caused by the pressure plate metal fatiguing stiff, it would be safe to budget for a new one in the next 12 months...

Have a chat to a garage that services and fixes them, and ask them what the most common faults are and how much it costs to fix them.

hello

just a note on clutches for 996tt they seem very well wearing on them i have more tt on my books than any other porsche model...they are also a hydraulic assisted power clutch so they never feel heavy even when worn only time you know is when it starts to slip...or power slave cylinder packs up.

thanks

Is it vulgar to say *spend a bit more* and get a decent 993TT?

...runs...

993 flag waving aside - a 996TT for 40K is truly something of a wonder in the performance-for-pound ratio stakes. Check it thoroughly and enjoy thoroughly...;-)

Thanks Mike,
That is excellent information and very good to know. I would gone around thinking the clutch is not heavy it must be fine.

Since the first time I saw the 993TT back in my Uni days I loved the look of the car and always aspired to owning one one day. Even now when I see a 993TT (or any widebody turbo shape 993) I have to stare. I have sat in 993s many time and always found it so odd that the pedals were ofset on the RHD. As with a lot of people I would love the exterior of the 993 with the interior of the 996. Now I recently had the opportunity to drive a 993 (albeit only a C4) but it completely dashed my view of the car. I have to say I really did not enjoy it. It was such an 'agricultural' experience, not that this was particularly bad but I just think it is not for me. The 996 interior is so modern looking in comparison and such an easy car to drive.

Obviously this is just my view from a very short test drive and I guess this really warrants a new thread although it will have been covered a million times on Porsche forums across the world before.

Agreed, top motor.

Absolute flying machine, every day of the week, come rain or shine.

Unmatched pace, reliability and status for the money

Yet I still don’t really fancy one
