Anyone here had a set of Mk.1 GT3 wheels refurbed by a company trading as "Lepsons" in Gillingham ?

If so, what is the standard of their work ?

Were the outer rims re-lacquered as part of the job ?

Anything that involves lacquer on a the Gt3 Mk1 wheels will inevitably start to break up again over time. The only solution I have found that really works is to have them anodised. Even then the magnesium content in the alloy is so high that anything more than light anodising will turn the wheels grey. I have had one set lightly anodised in silver finish with the centres powder coated black and one set heavily anodised black, again with the centres powder coated black. No problems with staining ever since.

I've had good experience with Lepsons. They do not diamond cut the rim (which makes the rim look thin and worn).

Instead they bead blast back to bare metal, paint, bake. They do not use lacquer on the rim. This provides a much more resilient and OEM looking finish.

They did the Sport Designs (GT3s) on my old 996 and they were first class. No idea how long they looked first class though because I sold the car a couple of months later.

Had my CSL wheels done with them because I'd heard good things. The results were shocking eek They had to be re-done - even then the results were less than perfect!

FAO PAUL BURRELL.

Any chance of some photographs of your anodised and powder coated wheels please ?

Can you advise where the work was carried out ?

I would rather get it right first time than have to b---er around having them done again in a couple of years with all the risks involved in having tyres removed/refitted etc.

Tony

I will take some piccies and email them to you. I used a local anodising company, Star Anodising of Erith(SE London) and their next door neighbours who did the powder coating - both a long long way from Devon and Cornwall. I dismantled the wheels(no mean feat in itself) and took them to the factory in bits. I think the results were excellent even though the all black wheels resulted from the inner rims originally going grey because of the effect of th anodising on the magnesium content. My car is black so the black wheels look really mean.

I hear that you have to renew the (many) wheel bolts - did you do yours, if so, how much per wheel...?

No need to renew the bolts as they are stainless steel and not the stretch variety. Just add a bit of loctite thread seal when refitting. I did break 1 getting them out though and this then had to be drilled out and replaced. You cannot get them from BBS but Jasmine have a few that they have salvaged. Will cost about £3 each though. If you do decide to dismantle he wheels yourself(a task that is not to be underestimated)best get a couple in reserve just in case.

I refurbed my own, and as has been said, BBS will not supply the bolts, not even enter into discussion about them.

I left mine bare, and just Autosol them every fortnight.

IIRC the bolts are titanium, and should be torqued up to 15ft/lb, and loctited into place, I spoke to Jasmine who were most helpful, Pictures are on my website www.964kevin.homecall.co.uk
