Oil filter for a 2.9 'S'

I'm about to change the oil filter on my S and reading through Steve Heath's bible he indicates that a standard Ford filter won't fit. He reccommends a Crosland 547 filter (for a DAF!) or a MotaQuip VFL115 filter.

I was wondering whether both are readily available and I'm particularly interested to hear of what other people have used and wha, if any, problems have been experienced.

Its about diameter... if you use a motor factor and give him the crosland number you need to ensure that if he is supplying an alternative make, and he will... it is the same diameter as the crosland, not just the same fitting.
they are readily available though...

You need a 'squatter' filter than the standard Ford V6 one as that didn't have the chassis rail right alongside like your S has! I prefer the Cooper Z501 available from Partco but each to their own.

the above works well still a pig to fit expect oil down your arms when you take it off

The motaquip VFL 313 fits a treat; I paid £3.53 + the dreaded at my local trade type factors the other day for one.

Yep it is the length of the filter that is the problem.

I have used Bosch filters which are much shorter than the ford one, but also fatter (although the fitting and seal are the same). I can get the part number later.

I think the Cooper and Crossland are the same size. I went to the motor factor with the cooper and crossland part numbers, I told him it was a ford fitting but shorter, and he sold me the bosch equivalent.

Totally agree with you guys, have found if you unsrew from above with bucket underneath you can dodge the oil down your arm. Also found that a Serria Cosworth filter happens to be a perfect fit, and in some books is specified as an option on the cologne.

There are 2 sizes for a 2.9 v6 available from express factors, a 72mm and a 90mm. The 72mm is the only option because of the limited space.
