HELLO PORSCHE PEOPLE, sorry, this will probably be a very boring question for all you experts. I have always, always wanted a porsche, and now I can probably just about afford one, it is a choice between the 944 s2 coupe or the 968 coupe, can probably afford up to about £8000,(what I would REALLY like is an old 911 carrera, but it won't fit through my very narrow driveway) please, does anyone have any comments or advice, wld be very grateful, thanks very much.

Well you are in very good 944 territory...cant think they are much thinner than a 911 though? (thinking of early SC)

Agree with caddyshack - an early narrow body 911 should not be more of a problem than a 944. A 3.2 Carrera or a LHD 964 would be good choice for the money .

(didn't have figs for an SC or Carrera 3.2 to hand but can't believe its wider than a 964 ...)

thanks for all the replies, keep them coming as I need all the help that I can get, unfortunately Ican't make my drive any wider, as it is between two houses, and mine is a grade 2* listed building (don't think that English Heritage would be too chuffed if I said I wanted to chop a bit of my wall off to fit my new car in the courtyard!). the available width at the narrowest point is 6ft 1 inch, i think that the 944 and 968 just about fit that, also have to have space in the back for my 12 and 17 year old, have seen a lovely 968 on pistonhead that lives in wiltshire silvery blue, looks the biz, has had loads of work done for around £8000. this forum thingy is really addictive, I should be in bed but am sitting in the kitchen talking to complete strangers, (i'm sure that my mother said that I should never talk to strangers!!)

SC or Carrera 3.2 are no wider than the 964 (except the Turbo / Wide Body Models).

I seriously doubt £8,000 is enough to by a decent SC though, let alone a 3.2 Carrera. You could get one to do up, but you'd have to be pretty useful yourself & if your drive is that narrow, do you have anywhere you could work on a car?

www.impactbumpers.com is the best place for advice on 1974 - 1989 911's give them a try.

Controversial opinion. Others on here consider the 968 as no more than a 944 S2 in a posh frock. And the S is generally regarded as the runt of the 968 litter - the coupe is a decent road car, the CS is a very decent track car, the S was a compromise made only for the UK market and was not much (if any) lighter than the coupe.

The 968 is the 944S3 and is a much better than the S2 than the S2 is better than the ealier models. As far as I can tell all those with S2's consider the 968 to be no more than an S2 with a posh frock, others would certainly see it as a step up. Wether its worth the extra money however is a moot point.

Good points. Can't disagree - my experience of the 968 is limited, hence the caveats in my origial post.
