Went to Bedford on Saturday to give the car it's first run of the season.

Failed the static noise test at the entry gate - limit is 101dB, my car
with the standard exhaust hit 105dB!!!

Obviously the atmospherics were against me (and the rest of us - there was
an almost record number of failures on the static on Saturday morning).
Cold and very damp (read: dense) air.

However, at Bedford Council's recent behest there is a change to the noise
tests after this failure. Previously you could run the car in the usual
manner and if it hit the drive-by limits on track they'd black flag you.
You now have to go to a quarantine area where one of the instructors then
takes your car round the short loop in front of the pits and the noise
level is radioed back to the marshall at the holding area. My car (as well
as all but one) passed on the drive-by with an 85dB on an 87dB limit.. By
the time I had cleared the noise checks it must have been after 10am!
Luckily the track was soaking wet first thing, so not so much of a
problem.....

I actually got black flagged again later in the morning for noise. The
instructor had to take my car past the noise meters again where it passed
with flying colours. Their excuse: "you must have been in traffic, mate -
try and stay clear of other cars round that section"!

They are also changing the layout of the North Loop circuit (hence the
change from the GT to the South West on Saturday) and extending it quite
considerably.

God knows how the 997RS' are going to get on.....

I can understand how frustrating it is to be black flagged or pre-warned about noise, but none of this is through the choice of those at Bedford Autodrome.

Apparently, the council demand an explanation for every breach of the noise limits they have imposed - even if the noise detectors pick up a thunder storm!

This country becomes more absurd by the day, none of this nonsense abroad, they shut off puplic roads in france for sprints and hill climbs in to villages, have race circuits built in the centre of towns in a lot of countries, yet english people will buy a house next to a race circuit and then moan about the noise???

got thrown off donington on saturday due to 'excessive noise', however couldn't hear the marshal's explanation due to the 747 taking off on full throttle above us....

PS to the owner of the 'red' 996RS with a 54 plate, the car does have a throttle - having to drive round the outside of one of these fantastic cars at redgate is a bit of a p1ss take - I'd suggest you get some driving tuition yes

I think everyone should boycott Bedford
Its a cra* place which is fine if you are learning the limits of your car
but its an airfield with no points to judge braking, boring after you have been there a few times
and the the people with the noise sensors think they are God
They want to put that noise meter beside Dr JP helicopter !!!!
we all went to Snetterton last Saturday - no hassle with noise ,better facilities
and it is a proper race track

They should use Bedford for bomb practice !

Bruce

I had the 997RS at Bedford a week ago on the south west circuit on sport setting - took a conservative approach to the static noice text on entry but no problems on track.
