One nearest to linkages are easiest to get it out, one nearest to gearbox are hell, bitches to get it out.
if you replaced it with little different sized pin/bolt gearbox knob would feel very sloppy.

If you find that the new pin is a slightly loose fit or works its way out over time (been there done that) a jubilee clip around the linkage will stop the pin ending on the road.
Get yourself a set of decent punches and do the job properly. I bodged mine up with a bolt years ago as I was in a rush, never re-did the job properly and when I was out on a first date with a girl I was trying to impress, it got stuck in 2nd gear
Fixed it with a bent nail Major points

i use locking wire through the pins to stop them falling out. (having been stranded once with no gears!)
