Does this look gorgeous or what? Spoken to the guy that owns/is doing the installation above, and am contemplating a project of my own. So - to that end, I'd also like to get my hands on a vertical-cooler flat-6. Now the guy that owns the engine above (it's a 3.6) has a fairly fancy 2.9 that he'd sell me for a ton of dosh. I've tried to reach ninemeister to chat with someone there but can never get through. I'd anticipated their doing the engine for me in any event, but this vertical cooling business poses a bit of a problem.
So what's the big deal with these engines? Is it a huge nightmare to convert one to a vertically-cooled affair? Do I have to get a factory engine from someplace like Freisinger where I'll walk away with a hole in my ass so big you could park Deep Space 9 up it? If I have to buy this 2.9, is it (as the owner maintains) a case of taking the cooling bits, fitting them to pretty much whatever other flat 6 I want, selling the valuable (he says - though without its cooling system, WTF?) original engine bits off and putting on the kettle? What are these cooling bits anyeay? There are some extra gears and chains going on, no doubt. I'm sure that internally it's all bespoke and awkward, but a lot of that Mr. Fusionesque stack of bits on top of the engine looks fabricate-able to me, though I'm sure someone will point out my naivety.
Anyone have a clue what I'm on about? Anyone with any ideas? Who do I talk to? Anyone experienced with these wierd little engines? Did I lock the door when I came in? Is Evangeline ever going to get it on with that Doctor on Lost?
Anyone?
Looks a total waste of time unless you're trying to get massive turbo power out of a small capacity engine.
Ninemeisters N/A engines allegedly kick out good HP figures without having to resort to modified cooling systems.
IIRC Porsche fitted them to the 934 (amongst others) to improve cooling, but they were knocking out 5-600hp from their single turbo engines in tandem with front mounted heat exchangers/intercoolers.
They used a series of bevel gears to take the drive through 90 degrees a couple of times.
Bet they sapped some HP mind........
Edited to read, yes it does look very nicely engineered

Now that is a thing of beauty!!
I've thought about this before with hair-brained ideas of VW buses with Porsche motors in etc.
I always thought that your flat 6 would be something you detach the normal fan shroud from and attach the vertical stack to - yes there must be some mechanicals to drive this but at the end of the day at least you don't have heat exchangers to deal with on a race car, so some things should be simpler!
Now an interesting experiment would be a 906 Carrera GTS or a 910 with a flat 8!
WISHES HE WOULD WIN THE LOTTERY TONIGHT

It merely looks like a verical cooling shroud, to replace the regular belt driven horizontal one.
Your best bet is to commission a new, custom made 917K longtail, and use the inspiration gleaned from that vertical cooler to construct a 1200bhp 12 cylinder boxer turbo engine worthy enough to push it along. I think someone did this, the result was very good if not a tad expensive. It might turn into a passion rather than an 'oh, lets buy a porsche' type affair, but rest assured if you do pump hundreds of thousands into a proper 917 rep I'm sure we'll all be along to see it go on the inaugural maiden thrashing..
There was a neat one here that went for 40:

Is it me, or did someone heavy sit on the roof, bending the whole thing like a Banana...
No - ignore me - it's just the colour thowing me off!!
I'm sure it's a real 910!
It supposed to be a 917 not a 910 but is one of the ugliest efforts you're ever likely to see. I mean why???

Look at the front skirt - it points up the way for god's sake - surely it generates LIFT!!
And that windscreen wiper isn't really designed to minimise drag, is it?
Also I suspect that the rear aerofoil would possibly combine with the front "skirt" to produce the kind of upward yaw that we saw at Le-Mans a few years ago with the Mercedes-Benz CLK GT LM!!
Hope it doesn't have too much power or it would need ailerons!!
