Just test-drove a lovely Boxster S (986) but i felt a little cramped in the front seat, even after adjusting the seat a few times. Apparently changing to sport seats to standard seats will help a little but I was wondering whether....

1 anyone else 6 foot 1 and above has had similar problems(I'm 6 foot 2) -i'd especially like to hear the views of someone tall who has had the car a while

2 is there anything else that anyone's tried to improve the position? getting the seat lowered would definitely help so is this possible? and maybe the steering wheel could go up further?

Other than that I loved the car and want to buy it so it's quite crucial!

Cheers.

The Boxster is snug, no mistake, but one issue that can make a huge difference is the manual adjusted seat sits significantly lower than the electrically adjusted one. Another case of paying more to get less!

There was a factory option of a 10mm lower driver's seat squab but that's a rare one. To get maximum leg room take the driver's seat as low as it will go and then back to the bulkhead. The 987 has more leg room as the pedals were sunk further forward in the floorpan. All very exciting stuff...

I'm the same height and do notice cramped cars. The 987S fitted me fine, have a sit in a showroom and see if you fit too.

Nodz,

If you're broad shouldered like I am, go for the standard seats. I had the sports seats in my previous 2.7 and they used to give me back ache on drives 2hrs plus. I've got the standard seats in my S and find these way more comfortable for my shape.

I've also noticed you can push the seat back further than the SS type - perhaps the SS seat backs are deeper? I think the main problem is that bulkhead restricts the best postition for the SS's if you're tall and/or broad. They're probably great in a 996.

Cheers,

Steve

I'm six foot (and a half inch!) and a fat bastard. I drive a Box with sports seats.

I fit in the Box fine. BUT...I still have to peer and bow my head to see the top of traffic lights if I'm next to 'em.

PHer and friend Daz must be six four if he's an inch, and I do hope he won't take offence, is a size or so bigger than me. Daz fits in his Turbo no problem and (given the roof was down and with a bit of fiddling) fitted in my Box well enough.

If you want a Boxster you can definitely have one. Might take a little getting used to and experimenting with seat positions and so on. Try one with standard seats. There IS a seat lowering option around (even as an aftermarket solution I believe) but I've managed without - maybe the extra two inches you've got on me is crucial - but I think you should be OK.

Or of course you could always bin the standard seats and fit buckets. Don't know whether you would need custom mounts or whether GT2/3 ones would do, but you would be able to get your back a solid couple of inches further towards the firewall with the thinner seat and as low as you would want to go...

didn't think i'd get so many opinions!

i guess the things that jump out are...

1 standard seats - should give me an extra inch or so going back

but perhaps more importantly....

2 finding a way of lowering the seat, whether by switching to a non-electric seat or using the lowering option that people have mentioned.

So, has anyone had this done? Or does anyone know anything about it?

I'm 6'3" when my back's not pi$$ about and have no trouble at all with my 986. Ive had it since Feb06 and done 13,000+ miles in that. Many of them in 150-200 mile stretches.

One thing though is that I don't have the center console. It does help a little but even on cars i have driven with one I'm quite comfortable.

The 987 is even better. I drove 500+miles in that.

Sports seats are bigger than standard fits apparently, my SS are not ideal for my 6'2" thin frame.
What did make a difference to me was the fitting of a gt3 console delete kit (removing the centre console your leg rubs on) which makes more leg room allowing a bit more free movememnt of your body into a more comfortable position.
Doesn't make a seat difference but definitely a good purchase.

Any further info on the seat lowering option? Or the swapping of the electric eat for a manual one?

I spoke to Porsche Guildford who, without much thought, said the seat couldn't be lowered.

I really need to confirm either way this morning if possible.

Thanks

I'm 6'4'' and drove two Boxsters (986) over a total of seven years, also on longer stretches of up to 500 miles a day. There is not plenty of space but I never found it too tight. My first car had the electric seats but I found the manual sports seats to suit my tall and slim frame much better and ordered my S with them.

If you don't have a PCM then getting rid of the centre console would definitively add space. The less padded seat I remember from the options list but have never seen one in real life...

So could I swap my electrically adjustable seat operation for a manually adjustable version?

I think this + standard seats + the GT3 console delete option should be enough to get me into a Boxster.

As before, any advise/info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm 6'2" and when I had a 986 found it very difficult, near impossible, to get comfortable in. The best compromise seemed to be with the seat set a little higher this allowed it it go further back with more rake. I guess the issue is one of inside leg rather than height(I sense an imminent deterioration in this thread). The 987 has more room.

Ah, I wondered about that. I'm 6' 2" with long legs, and when I tried a 986 Boxster I didn't fit. But at last summer's PCGB festival I tried a Cayman, expecting it to be a tight squeeze. It fitted like a glove. So I bought one.

I'm guessing the couple of inches the floorplan mod liberates are critical for taller drivers.

Sadly I've decided to give up on this car (and the 986 altogether).

If anyone wants a great condition and great looking Boxster (rainforst green is the most underated colour on these cars) then get yourself a bargain at Cridfords.

Just don't post on here about how much you're enjoying it!

Shame

Agreed on the rainforest green though - I really liked mine when I had it
