I'm fielding opinion for research i'm doing on car branding.
Ultima is unusual in that it doesn't have a traditional badge
- and this is a reflection of the self build nature of the car.
how do owners feel about the Ultima marque?
apply the decal, or leave it off, what are your thoughts?

Part of the reason I wanted some type of badging was so people would stop asking what is it. It really doesn't work, people still ask, but I think it looks nice on the car. I got the chrome letters from www.mynissanparts.com the 'ltima' is from a nissan Altima, and the 'U'is from a nissan Quest. The 'U' is a little bigger than the rest of the letters but I still think it looks nice.

On my car, the only clue that it is an Ultima is that it says 'Ultima' on each of the two petrol filler caps. Even with the enormous standard type decals down each side of the car people STILL ask 'What is it'. I don't mind this question if it is so subtly badged it is difficult to spot but otherwise I might be tempted to be a bit rude, and that would never do, would it?
Also, from a personal standpoint, even if people did know of the brand, which most do not, I do not feel the need, nor have I ever done, to broadcast to all and sundry what I am driving around in (good or bad).
It does feel at times that it is only you and a handful of others that have inside information and I must confess to feeling a little smug about that and maybe that is why I am not keen to broadcast more details? Don't know really, still a bit to early (in the day I mean, not my life) for self analysis but aside from all that, I do think that the current style of big decals is a little gaudy and not befitting a car of this type.

Yeah, and the word 'Ultima GTR' written in bright pink bubble gum lettering!
And what about fitting oval shaped wheels, a flower that squirts water and rigging the car so that when it comes to a halt, there is a big explosion and the doors fall off?

Hi Miles,
I agree that Ultima is a little unusual in that they have no pictorial bonnet logo. The factory supply a vinyl small Ultima GTR or Can-Am for the front and a slightly larger version for the rear. They are available in a couple of colours.
I'm all for modifying cars with boss single exhausts, different dashes or a variety of body mods, but uniform consistant logos are where it's at. Don't know if this is the same for others, but I feel obliged to champion the Ultima brand as if I am more than just a buyer, I feel more attached because I built one. With this in mind I prefer to see a consistant, uniform usage of the Ultima logo/type face and positioning, in way that you would expect to see the word Maserati centre rear of the vehicle.
If fact if I were Ted, I'd complete the safety check with the 'topping out' of the vehicle by the man himself applying the Ultima badging - as if giving his aproval that another Ultima is complete. It works for Aston (OK perhaps the MD doesn't affix the badge).
To answer you question Miles, I'd say that the design of the Facory's chosen badging is less important to me that seeing that owners adhere (whoops) to a given positioning so that in a line up of cars, we look like pro outfit and not a bunch of Halfords ram raiders!!
This ruling need not apply if you have twin stripes...........there are special...err...rules just for you guys!!
But anyway Miles - as an ex vinyl man myself I'm interested, what would you see as a bonnet badge?
I did look at a chromed plastic Ultima GTR - but really it's the factory's call.
Pete
Hi guys; I probably won't put the decals on my GTR. I think the car looks great naked. What I would like is for Ted to come up with a logo for the car that could be put on floor mats, car cover ect or perhaps sewn into a shirt or such. If Ted's not intrested perhaps an owner with some talent in grapics could publish something on this web for the rest of us to use.
thankyou everyone who bothered to post on this.
Personally I like the Ultima typestyle - Rockwell Bold Oblique, since it is so different from other car brands, and feels very powerful.
and with a name like Ultima, you don't need a symbol.
If you want people to know what your driving, the huge decals make sense to me - they're as loud as the car itself.
Furthermore, big decals have a racecar sponsorship aesthetic, again, true to the nature of the car.

You can be sitting in the car with 90mm high decals down the side and they will still ask what it is.
Steve
which suggest either;
a) it looks like a sponsor
b) people just want to speak the owner of such a car
c) people are stupid
d) all of the above

a) I don't think that Joe public would likely make such an assumption. Maybe it is just that the lettering is so large that when up close, it is to big to read. I also believe that most are so blown away by the presence of the thing that b) then comes into play.
c) As in all walks of life, some and some.
d) A mixture of that too.
In escence, I feel that should the owner wish to publicise the marque by affixing a badge, be it good or bad, then so be it, it is a self build car after all but in my experience (and others that I have met along the way), I think that b) is probably the most pertinent scenario pertaining to these cars. Unlike luckyp, I do not subscribe to the being pro- Ultima Sports ideal and am keen to go off on a tangent but that is the beauty of these cars, because of their anonymity, you can modify them however you see fit.
