Environmental friendly electric cars
Discussion
I just caught the tail end of Pulling Power (hey I was flicking through the channels and it was that or classic corronation street)
They were showing a smart car that was electric saying that it was a non-polluting car. This is utter B**l*cks as the electricity has to come from a powerstation which polutes the atmosphere.
Does anyone have the figures on how much polution is chucked out by the powerstations to provide the electricity for one of these cars. I am interested as I would love to get to their website and mention this to them. I heard a rumour (long time ago) that an electric car was more polutive than a well tuned "normal car" ie greenhouse effect etc.
Cheers

Smeagol,
There are many factor in this, including what type of power station, car type etc.
Modern power stations are much cleaner than they used to be, but the overall efficiency of electric cars has only recently achieved the level to make them viable re pollution. If you take the battery manufacture and eventual disposal into account, the internal combustion engine is better. The key advantage of these cars is to reduced city pollution.

P.S the level of air pollution in the Tube is 3 times street level, think we should all use our cars

Check out www.acpropulsion.com/
Electric sports cars with reasonable performance - but still quite poor range.
0-60 4.1s

Smeagol,
http://cartalk.cars.com/Mail/Electric/
I knew it was about somewhere. You need to go quite a way down the page to get to the basic info of
Internal Combustion Engine 30 % efficient
electric (inc power station transmission etc) 30%
