I am stuck trying to feather the edges of some pictures to make a montage without sharp edges. I want to join these three pictures together

to make this

but with the edges in the middle blend together something like this

I have tried the airbrush and dodge tool with the fade command but can't get the right effect, can anyone help and tell me how it's done.

Mm!? scratchchin

Trouble is that your background isn't quite a "sympathetic" as the example you give, so I can't easily see how you're going to soften the edges of the barrier in the middle.

Otherwise how about not cropping the left imasge so tightly on the right, but clone out the following car so you've got a tarmac background - or even clone in some barrier into that space?

I could use different images that will merge better but I can't find how to soften the edges, the help tools assume you know what you are doing.

FWIW I am not that keen on the blended one you posted there
As has been said, because of your cropped images, I can't see that it would work out too well.

Fair enough on my choice of background but how do you fade or feather the edges?

Several ways, as ever, I suspect.

- Apply a gradient?

How about this:

It was done by creating an image with three layers, one for each photo. I then extended the crash barrier out to the left and right using the clone tool, and then used the clone/push/smudge tools to even out the road surface.

It's a bit rough and ready as I did it quickly, and only have Paint Shop Pro version 5 here at work!

That's the sort of thing I'm after, excellent. I will give that ago later. I have been trying using the rectangular marquee tool and feathering but can't get the effect I wanted.
Many thanks.

A bit more effort to keep the stripes in the barriers and it should look ok! Good luck
