Hi, could someone tell me if the block on an auto mini is the same as one on a manual? reason im asking is that we have just bought a nice 1275 spi auto mayfair to do up, but would really like to convert it to manual. I cant remember (been out the mini scenen for a few years now!) if they are the same block or not. I know the subframe is different, how about the driveshafts? is there anything else that would need changing as isnt the same? thanks

I've converted 2 minis from auto to manual. The first one i did a changed the whole lot subframe, pedal box etc. The second one i kept the subframe and pedal box and just took the spacer out and replaced it with the clutch pedal. Kept the subframe and tried to fit the conversion kit, but ended up making some 6mm engine mount spacers instead as the ones supplied with the kit are too thick, also hole to drill in subframe to fit manual mounts. The blocks are differant on a 1000cc anyway so presume so on a 1275. Hope this helps.

Yes, in my experience, the block is indeed different. Im not sure if an auto block would fit a manual box, but I suspect not?

does anyone know what the difference is on the block?

I know the difference between fwd and rwd blocks (rear oil seal on last MB cap and block and oil pick up threaded/non) but what difference on the auto? Is a rwd type crank used to allow the tourque converter to bolt on?

the crank is the same, the primary gear is splined differant to allow the torqe converter to fit.

the difference in the blocks is the oil ways, there is no oil fliter provision and the oil filter is bolted to the gearbox, so the oil pipe comes out the block at the top and goes down into the gearbox - or in the case of later ones, internally.

you can drill the early type blocks - but its apparently a expensive job.

I think you will have the 2.76 FD which is of use to some turbo nutters with lots of bananas.

The oil pump is totally different, as is the recess in the block to mount it!

yep, picked the mini up today, so were no mini owners again! i can see now after looking at the engine how different it is externally alone. The hunt for a good manual spi is now on!
