Perhaps as this is a slightly new idea within PH we ought to discuss whats acceptable in here and whats not before people start upsetting each other?

Business questions and requests for help/services I think but not full blown adverts

I think its alright to let each other know of the services we offer. Even stuff like job openings, job searches etc...

I mean anything business/work related should be allowed?

Requests for services rather than selling i.e. pull, not push? So to speak...

But the problem is that PH might not be the first place people think of when needing a service.

At least if people are allowed to list their services then next time someone needs a service they might just go "Aha, I remember someone on PH offering that service".

Also gives businesses a chance to show off their warez and make people aware of of something they previously didn't know was available.

Why not: adverts for services in the classifieds. Recruitment, offers to barter in the B2B forum. As Size Nine says, pull not push...

Stand corrected on a better idea, stops all adverts and therefor any "grey" areas

How about looking for jobs? Would that be acceptable to post here - for example I know myself and a few other Phers are about to graduate and I am sure that there will be others who are looking for a new direction etc.

Can we post what we do, what we are looking for etc etc to see if any fellow PHers want to recruit us or know of any positions?

My take on it...

I think the PULL method is best
Individuals looking for work is cool too (already happens a fair bit on General Gassing)

I don't think people should PUSH their businesses hard eg Advertising or else Ted's advertisers might as well just post in here instead.

Maybe ted could put a search field on the occupation profile field for us to look for services eg "Web designer" or whatever.

The issue of advertising is more pertinent in other forums where I don't want those that are paying for exposure feeling hard done by those who take the piss.

The 'pull' option seems best here. "I'm looking for someone to do such and such, can anyone help?" "I'm a grad looking for work in so and so area" etc.

If this forum gets popular enough then there may be businesses that want to advertise their services here. That's fine. They can pay for them and the status quo is maintained.

Basic rule: Don't take the piss.

Great idea....I'm feeling embarassed asking for people's thoughts on various IT topics under general gassing.

I guess I just don't know enough, so I end up asking lots of questions. Doesn't help that I'm also an auditor (paid to ask questions )

PS thanks to everyone so far for offering thoughts on
1. Online backups and DR
2. How much to charge for consultancy
3. Sole Trader / Ltd Co.
4. ISP Co.s
5. Moving electicity meters.

Thanks big time!
