Wide Angle lens for Canon EF
Discussion
The major alternatives must be to consider either a Tamron or a Tokina.
The Tokina range have generally a great reputation for quality and I think they have something like a 12-24. The Tamron has a 11-18 I believe.
My suggestion would be to try and handle them if you can, because it's not 'til you see them in the plastic that you will realise which one is for you. I have an older Tokina, a 28-70mm - nice piece of kit but a bit heavy for what it is and I just don't use it much compared to other lenses in my bag. Also the "feel" is just not right.
Otherwise I recently picked up a Sigma 14mm (couldn't justify a Nikkor, but a secondhand Sigma was sub £300 IIRC) which I really like using and get on with very well. But I have heard of lots of people having focus issues with some Sigmas
and certain camera bodies.
I bet someone will come along with some review in the usual mags in a minute, but have you had a look on dpreview and Fred Miranda for reviews???

Canon's no good, it's only EF-S (bastards).
Had a play with the Sigma 10-20 in Calumet today and liked it. 340 quid though so I said no, went home and paid 299 from Bristol Cameras
Should be here in a couple of days.
I had a play with the 12-24 as well but I couldn't really understand what the extra 100 quid was buying me given the similar but not quite focal range. Although the front element was a LOT more spherical on that one. Is it a semi-fisheye or something? Seemed to be a lot more disortion at 12mm than on the other at 10mm. Plus the most ill conceived hood ever caused major vignetting up to about 15mm (10-20 vignetted at 10 but went by 11mm).
Impressed with build quality of both though, as I have been with most Sigmas I've handled.
