I have a 1996 Sport and there seems to be a fair amount of 'play' in the steering rack.

The steering wheel can move approx. 5cms either way without any movement at the wheels.

There is no obvious slack in it and when on the road it seems ok but I am sure it could be better.

I have removed one of the plates on the rack and removed a shim, but it does not seem to make much difference.

Any ideas?

All you can do is to check the obvious; track rod ends, mounts and it may be worth looking at the column UJ's too. There is not much to it all really and if the problem persists, it can only be the rack at fault I would think. Out of interest, what rack does your car use?

I think Titan make the alloy rack.
I'm sure they would be able to rebuild it for you if it is.

ps: one problem I have had for a long time is that turning right is easier than left. Left the rack seems a bit "stiffer" but when the car is jacked up, cant feel any binding.... could be the camber set up??

It'll probably only need tightening up, have you tried this.... its the big bolt were the UJ is attached.

Paul, might be worth checking the bump steer.
